Overview
Léoube is an organic wine estate (domaine viticole bio) in Provence, located a few kilometres from Saint-Tropez on a protected coastal site, and describes itself as a pioneer of organic wine in Provence. Alongside its organic wines it produces extra virgin olive oil from a 20-hectare olive grove, as well as gourmet products, gift boxes and a Mediterranean gin. The estate also operates Le Café Léoube, a restaurant and lounge. The domaine was bought by the Bamford family in 1997, which began agricultural and viticultural work using virtuous methods, followed by renovation of the cellar, château and historic gardens. The first vintage and first extra virgin olive oil were launched in 2000, and Léoube began exporting from 2007 to 2008, starting with the United Kingdom.
History
The Château Léoube was built at the end of the 14th century, at the same time and on the same architectural model as the Château de Brégançon. The domaine de Léoube depended on the Seigneurie de Brégançon until 1666, when it became patrimonial property. Between the 17th and 20th centuries the domaine passed through the hands of several owners; in 1921 the Engelsen & Lebel family bought it at auction from the family of the descendants of Emile Gérard, owner since 1840. In 1975 Cap Bénat, the territory housing the Léoube domaine, was classified as heritage by the Conservatoire du Littoral. In 1977, in the United Kingdom, the Bamford family began converting its agricultural lands to organic farming principles. In 1997 the Bamford family bought the domaine, first launching agricultural and viticultural work by reworking the land with virtuous methods, followed by renovation of the cellar, the château and the historic gardens. In 2000 the first vintage and the first extra virgin olive oil were launched. From 2007 to 2008 Léoube began exporting, with the United Kingdom as the first international market. In 2010 the Léoube domaine inaugurated its new winery (chai). In 2011 Léoube obtained its organic certification and launched its vintage Léoube Collector red, a non-appellation wine mainly made from Cabernet franc. In 2016 the Love rosé cuvée was launched.
