Overview
Choices Flooring is an Australian chain of flooring supply shops operating across Australia and New Zealand. It is the flagship retail brand of Newfurn Floor Coverings Ltd, a group whose origins trace back to 1959, when a small group of independent Victorian furniture retailers met to form an association to compete more effectively against large franchised organisations. That meeting led to the creation of Newfurn Floor Coverings Ltd. The modern consumer-facing brand began in 1993, when Newfurn launched the Carpet Choice brand with 17 stores in Victoria. After a further brand update, the business became Choices Flooring and expanded rapidly to more than 140 stores across Australia and New Zealand. The group has also launched into the New Zealand market, where it operates a smaller network of stores. Choices Flooring positions itself as a flooring and interior solutions retailer rather than a pure carpet seller. Its product range spans carpet, luxury vinyl flooring, timber flooring, rigid/hybrid flooring, laminate flooring, flooring underlay, rugs and runners, and window furnishings. The company supports customers with in-store advice, room visualisation tools, and styling content, and describes itself as helping customers design their interior from the floor up. Newfurn Floor Coverings Ltd is also parent to brands such as Style Flooring and Interiors, and has invested in industry training through the Chillingworth Training Institute, an enterprise Registered Training Organisation, alongside its Newfurn Training Academy. The group is privately held and is not listed on a public stock exchange.
History
Choices Flooring traces its origins to 1959, when a small group of independent Victorian furniture retailers met to discuss forming an association to maximise the effectiveness of their businesses in the face of increased competition from large, franchised organisations. That initial meeting resulted in the formation of Newfurn Floor Coverings Ltd. For more than three decades, Newfurn operated as a floor coverings group. In 1993, it launched the Carpet Choice brand with 17 stores in Victoria. Carpet Choice became the consumer-facing retail identity for the group's flooring offer. After a further brand update, the business was rebranded as Choices Flooring. Under this name, the network grew rapidly to include more than 140 stores across Australia and New Zealand. The company describes itself as having become arguably Australia's most progressive retail floor coverings group and a major force in the Australian retail sector. More recently, Choices Flooring expanded into the New Zealand market, where it currently operates 8 stores. The group has continued to evolve its retail format, introducing new store layouts that incorporate touch-screen technology and providing interior decorating training for team members. Newfurn Floor Coverings Ltd is also parent company to brands such as Choices Flooring and Style Flooring and Interiors. To address a growing shortage of skilled labour in the retail floor covering industry, Newfurn launched its own Enterprise Registered Training Organisation, trading as Chillingworth Training Institute (CTI) (Academic & Vocational Training Pty Ltd, RTO 91070). The CTI works alongside the corporate Newfurn Training Academy (NTA), which delivers an Industry Trade Card accreditation for experienced flooring installers, Master Class professional development seminars, and in-house training for member retailers and partners in roles such as sales consultants, store owners and support staff. At the launch, Newfurn CEO Andrew Lewis stated that the aim of the program was to produce job-ready professional flooring craftspeople who would become the next generation of leaders in the flooring industry. Today, Choices Flooring operates as a multi-brand retail group with a network of more than 140 stores across Australia and New Zealand, offering carpet, hard flooring, rugs and window furnishings, supported by in-store teams, room visualisation tools and styling content.
