Overview

Chugai-Igakusha Co., Ltd. (株式会社中外医学社) is a Japanese publisher specialising in medical and healthcare literature. It was founded in 1952 in Tokyo by Michio Aoki as the book-publishing arm of Nihon Iji Shinposha, the medical newspaper company established by Hikotaro Umezawa. The company's stated purpose was to disseminate medical and healthcare knowledge widely in Japan and abroad, and it has remained focused on that mission for more than seven decades. The publisher's catalogue spans basic medical sciences through every major clinical specialty, serving medical students, residents, practising physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Its output includes single-topic monographs, clinical handbooks, atlases, examination-preparation titles, statistical and research-methods guides, and periodicals such as the journal J-IDEO. Recent catalogue highlights include revised editions of works on depression, cardiopulmonary bypass, bone-marrow diagnostics, TAVI procedures, blood-disease therapeutics and clinical statistics, as well as practical titles on clinic management, ChatGPT for physicians and patient follow-up for pharmacists. Chugai-Igakusha has been based in Yaraicho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, since 1964, a short walk from Kagurazaka Station. The company is led by President Shigeru Aoki, who succeeded founder Michio Aoki in 2000. It remains a privately held Japanese company and has embraced digital publishing, beginning the conversion of its backlist to e-books in 2011. Its long-running journals include Rinshoi (founded 1975) and Clinical Neuroscience (founded 1983).

History

Chugai-Igakusha traces its origins to Nihon Iji Shinposha, a medical newspaper company founded in 1921 by Hikotaro Umezawa. Umezawa, having achieved success with the newspaper, sought to expand into book publishing. In 1952, Michio Aoki established Chugai-Igakusha Co., Ltd. as the book-publishing division of Nihon Iji Shinposha, based in Kobikicho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, with Aoki serving as representative director. The company's founding purpose was to disseminate knowledge related to medicine and healthcare widely in Japan and abroad. In 1964 the company relocated to Yaraicho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, where it remains headquartered today. The 1970s and 1980s saw the launch of several long-running journals: Rinshoi (臨床医) in 1975 and Clinical Neuroscience in 1983. Over the decades the publisher built an extensive catalogue of series and single-volume works, including the Q&A collections (1955, 1961), Chugai Igaku Sosho (1963), General Practitioner Sensho (1968), Diagnostic Exercises (1970), the SAS series (1977), the National Exam series (1980), the Emergency Treatment series (1984), Annual Review volumes for respiratory, circulatory, neurological, digestive, endocrine/metabolic and hematological fields (1985), Hematology Highlights (1992), Immunology Highlights (1994) and textbooks for allied health professionals (2004). In 2000, founder Michio Aoki became Representative Director and Chairman, and Shigeru Aoki assumed the role of Representative Director and President. Around this time, reflecting changes in the medical publishing industry, the company began publishing more books aimed at healthcare professionals. In 2011, Chugai-Igakusha started digitising its backlist, converting previously published books into e-books. The company continues to publish new editions and new titles across clinical medicine, nursing, pharmacy and allied health, and remains a privately held Japanese publisher.
