Overview

Cinespace is a multiplex cinema located in the Waterfront Bremen shopping and entertainment centre in the Industriehäfen district of Bremen, Germany. It opened in December 2003 and is operated by Burmester Kinobetriebs-GmbH, a Berlin-based cinema operator. As a family-run cinema, it has been part of the Cineplex-Gruppe since 2019. The cinema focuses on blockbusters and mainstream films, but also offers live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, concerts from around the world, anime, and many other cinema events. The cinema complex originally formed part of the entertainment area of the Space Park urban entertainment centre, which opened partially in 2004. After the Space Park closed, the site was sold to the Irish LNC Property Group, which carried out conversion and expansion work. In September 2008 the shopping centre reopened under the name Waterfront Bremen, and Cinespace again became part of its entertainment offering. Technically, Cinespace sets high standards. All eleven auditoriums are built to THX standards and equipped with Dolby Digital sound; four auditoriums (1, 2, 3, 9) also feature Dolby Atmos. Digital projection was introduced from 2006 and completed in autumn 2011, after which the cinema screened exclusively digital films. Since 2009, seven auditoriums have been usable for 3D films using polarisation technology. In January 2014 the largest auditorium was equipped with Dolby Atmos — the first such installation in northern Germany — using 64 QSC loudspeakers. In autumn 2018 renovation work was completed, including new seating in the loggia area and D-Box motion seats in two auditoriums. On 1 July 2026, Cinespace opened its technically upgraded auditorium 1 as a Dolby Vision + Atmos hall, making it one of only a few cinemas in Germany with this combination at the time. Beyond regular film programming, Cinespace offers previews, 3D films, "cinema for ladies only", "cinema for men only", and children's birthday parties. All auditoriums can be used for events, meetings, and conferences. The cinema regularly shows live satellite transmissions from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (suspended due to the war against Ukraine), and the Royal Opera in London, as well as pop, rock, and classical music concerts.

History

Cinespace opened in December 2003 in the Industriehäfen district of Bremen, within the Waterfront Bremen shopping centre, which includes elements of an urban entertainment centre. The cinema complex was part of the entertainment area of the Space Park urban entertainment centre, which began partial operation in 2004. After the Space Park closed, the site was sold to the Irish LNC Property Group. LNC undertook conversion and expansion measures to orient the area towards the Weser river and restructure the retail area. In September 2008, the shopping centre reopened under the name Waterfront Bremen, and Cinespace again became part of the entertainment offering. The cinema is operated by Burmester Kinobetriebs-GmbH, based in Berlin. As a family-run cinema, it has been part of the Cineplex-Gruppe since 2019. The architecture of the cinema, like the original Space Park, refers to the theme of space travel. All eleven auditoriums are arranged along a corridor on the first floor and can be reached from the cinema foyer via a spiral staircase. The auditoriums are built to THX standards. All halls are equipped with Dolby Digital sound, and four halls (1, 2, 3, 9) also feature Dolby Atmos. From 2006, the auditoriums were gradually converted to digital cinema using DLP technology digital projectors. Digitalisation was completed in autumn 2011, and since then Cinespace has screened exclusively digital films. An additional auditorium for digital cinema and 3D films has been in operation since early 2009. Since 2009, a total of seven auditoriums can be used for 3D films, using polarisation technology. In January 2014, Cinespace equipped its largest auditorium with Dolby Atmos — the first installation of Dolby Atmos in northern Germany. 64 QSC loudspeakers were installed, including five subwoofers, two of which were mounted on the rear wall opposite the screen. 16 loudspeakers were hung directly above the audience area on the cinema ceiling. In autumn 2018, renovation work was completed. In addition to new seating with armchairs throughout the loggia area, ten D-Box seats were installed in two auditoriums, moving simultaneously with the film action and sound. VIP recliners with adjustable backrest and footrest are installed in cinemas 1, 2, and 3. Currently, four auditoriums are equipped with D-Box seats: cinema 1 and cinema 2 have extendable recliners, cinema 9 has a wide armchair (DBX2), and cinema 3 is equipped with D-Box Motion Seats. On 1 July 2026, Cinespace opened its technically revised auditorium 1 as a Dolby Vision + Atmos hall. At the time of opening, only one other cinema in Germany had this combination, alongside four other halls that may call themselves "Dolby Cinema". Technically, Cinespace's auditorium 1 is on par with a Dolby Cinema; differences exist in hall layout, seating, and appearance. In terms of events, alongside the normal cinema programme, Cinespace offers previews, 3D films, "cinema for ladies only", "cinema for men only", and birthday parties for children. All auditoriums can be used for events, meetings, and conferences. Furthermore, Cinespace is among the German cinemas that regularly show live broadcasts from the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre (suspended due to the war against Ukraine), and the Royal Opera in London. The broadcasts of selected operas are transmitted live via satellite and projected onto the screen by a digital projector. Music concerts by pop, rock, and classical artists are also part of the programme.
