History

City Centre is a shopping mall in Mangaluru, India. It is the fifth largest mall in Karnataka and the second largest mall in Mangaluru, located on K S Rao Road. It was opened to the public on 25 April 2010 and provides shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure activities. The mall's construction was surrounded by controversies. In August 2009, a news report stated that unscientific excavation for the building posed a threat to Bavutagudda (Light House Hill), a place of historic prominence in Mangalore; the then Deputy Commissioner ordered the builders to build a retention wall. On 20 April 2009, the Mangalore City Corporation commissioner ordered the demolition of certain parts of the building, including the seventh and eighth floors, as it was not constructed according to the approved blueprint; the builders obtained a stay on the order. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board served a notice on the builders for causing environmental pollution, as three chimneys were installed without required permission and smoke caused inconvenience to nearby residents. Prior to the inauguration on 25 April 2010, the Town Planning Officer of MCC stated it was illegal to open the mall without clearances, and four days before the inauguration the MCC served notice to the owners to vacate the building since the Fire and Emergency Services Department had not given a no-objection certificate. In August 2012, social activists accused the then DC of Mangalore of showing unnecessary interest in regularizing the building; the DC had refused permission for a multiplex in the building due to lack of clearances, but just before his transfer to Bengaluru in December 2012, he issued a license to the multiplex. On 31 July 2010, four salesmen of the Mochi Shoe Shop at the mall were reportedly attacked after one washed his lunch box in a bathroom basin; Mr. Dharmaraj, an architect at Mohtisham Complexes and in-charge of the mall, objected, and a group of 12 people allegedly attacked the salesmen on his orders. By 5 August 2010, four people were arrested, but Mr. Dharmaraj and another accused applied for anticipatory bail and went into hiding. On 21 February 2019, a fire broke out in the mall.
