Overview

Cloudera is an American enterprise data software company that grew out of the Apache Hadoop ecosystem and developed into a provider of distributed data-management, analytics, and machine-learning platforms. The company was formed in 2008 by Christophe Bisciglia, Amr Awadallah, Jeff Hammerbacher, and Mike Olson. Their backgrounds connected Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and enterprise database software, giving Cloudera an early combination of open-source engineering expertise and commercial software experience. Doug Cutting, a co-founder of Hadoop, joined the company in 2009 and further linked Cloudera to the development of large-scale distributed data processing. Cloudera initially built its business around a commercial distribution of Hadoop. The underlying technology was available as open source, while Cloudera generated revenue through enterprise support, consulting, subscriptions, and related management tools. This model helped organizations adopt Hadoop for workloads that required the storage and processing of very large data sets, including data warehousing, log analysis, customer analytics, fraud detection, and machine learning. In March 2009, Cloudera began offering a commercial Hadoop distribution, establishing the foundation for its later enterprise platform strategy. The company raised substantial private capital during its expansion. It received a funding round led by Accel Partners in 2009, followed by larger rounds in 2010, 2011, and 2014. Intel invested $740 million in 2014 for an 18 percent stake, a transaction that valued Cloudera at approximately $4.1 billion at the time. Cloudera subsequently repurchased Intel's shares in 2020. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2017 under the symbol CLDR, but its public-market period was affected by slowing sales growth, intense competition, and the increasing adoption of cloud services from providers such as Amazon Web Services. In 2018, Cloudera and Hortonworks announced a merger designed to combine two of the largest commercial Hadoop vendors. The transaction closed in January 2019. The combined company retained the Cloudera name and broadened its product base, customer relationships, and engineering resources. Leadership changed soon afterward: Tom Reilly and founder Mike Olson departed in June 2019, Martin Cole served as interim chief executive, and former Hortonworks chief executive Rob Bearden became Cloudera's CEO in January 2020. Cloudera was acquired and taken private in October 2021 by an investor group led by KKR and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $5.3 billion. The move ended its public listing and allowed the company to pursue a longer-term enterprise software strategy outside the public markets. Cloudera has since emphasized the Cloudera Data Platform, hybrid and multi-cloud deployment, data lakehouse architecture, Apache Iceberg support, machine learning, and governance for distributed enterprise data. The company's current scope extends beyond traditional Hadoop distributions. Its platform is intended to help organizations manage data across public clouds, private infrastructure, and data centers, while supporting data engineering, analytics, data warehousing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. In 2024, Cloudera acquired Verta, a company associated with machine-learning and large-language-model operations. The acquisition supported Cloudera's effort to strengthen operational AI capabilities and connect governed enterprise data with AI development and deployment. Cloudera also works with technology partners including AWS, NVIDIA, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, ServiceNow, VAST, Dell, IBM, and Oracle.

History

Cloudera was established on June 27, 2008, in Burlingame, California, by Christophe Bisciglia, Amr Awadallah, Jeff Hammerbacher, and Mike Olson. Bisciglia, Awadallah, and Hammerbacher had worked at major technology companies including Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook, while Olson brought enterprise database experience from Sleepycat and Oracle. Doug Cutting, a co-founder of Hadoop, joined Cloudera in 2009. His involvement reinforced the company's connection to the open-source distributed-computing project that became central to its product strategy. Cloudera's initial model was to commercialize Hadoop for enterprise customers. Rather than charging for the underlying open-source project, it combined a supported distribution with consulting, technical services, management software, and subscriptions. The company began offering a commercial Hadoop distribution in March 2009. Early financing included a $5 million round led by Accel Partners in 2009, a $25 million round in October 2010, and a $40 million round in November 2011. These investments supported product development and expansion in a market increasingly interested in processing data sets beyond the practical limits of conventional relational systems. In June 2013, Olson moved from the CEO role to become chairman of the board and chief strategy officer. Tom Reilly, previously associated with ArcSight, became CEO. Cloudera raised $160 million in March 2014, followed by Intel's $740 million investment for an 18 percent stake. That investment implied a valuation of approximately $4.1 billion and represented an important strategic link between Cloudera's software and Intel's data-center ambitions. Cloudera later repurchased Intel's shares in December 2020 for $314 million. Cloudera completed an initial public offering on April 28, 2017. During its public-market period, the company faced pressure from slower sales growth, changing enterprise purchasing patterns, and competition from public-cloud infrastructure providers, especially Amazon Web Services. The broader market was also shifting from standalone Hadoop distributions toward cloud-native data services, managed analytics, and newer storage and table-format technologies. In October 2018, Cloudera and Hortonworks announced plans to merge. The transaction closed in January 2019, combining two of the principal commercial vendors that had supported the Hadoop ecosystem. The combined company sought to offer a broader enterprise data platform and to reduce the fragmentation of the commercial Hadoop market. Leadership turnover followed: Tom Reilly and founder Mike Olson left in June 2019, with board member Martin Cole serving as interim CEO. Rob Bearden, formerly Hortonworks' CEO, became Cloudera's CEO in January 2020. The company was taken private in October 2021 when KKR and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice completed an all-cash acquisition valued at approximately $5.3 billion. The transaction removed Cloudera from the public markets and changed its status from a listed company to a privately held enterprise software business. Cloudera subsequently positioned its platform around hybrid and multi-cloud data management, data lakes, lakehouses, analytics, governance, and machine learning rather than Hadoop alone. Cloudera announced support for Apache Iceberg in 2022, reflecting the industry's movement toward open table formats and lakehouse architectures. In 2023, the company became involved in reported patent litigation, including a civil complaint from R2 Solutions and a jury verdict in favor of StreamScale. In June 2024, Cloudera acquired Verta, extending its capabilities in machine-learning and large-language-model operations. The company has described this direction as part of a broader enterprise AI strategy, supported by relationships with major cloud, semiconductor, model, and enterprise technology partners.
