Overview

Commvault is a United States-based enterprise software company focused on data protection, backup, recovery, cyber resilience, archiving, and cloud data management. Its products are designed to help organizations protect information across data centers, public and private clouds, SaaS environments, virtualized infrastructure, and hyperscale storage systems. The company serves enterprises and other institutions that need to preserve business-critical data, restore operations after system failures or cyberattacks, and manage information across increasingly distributed IT environments. The business originated in a Bell Labs development group formed in 1988 to work on data management, backup, and recovery. The group later became part of AT&T Network Systems and then Lucent Technologies. In 1996, the unit was sold and incorporated as an independent company, with Scotty R. Neal serving as chief executive. The company subsequently broadened its focus from conventional backup toward the management of networked storage and heterogeneous enterprise environments. Bob Hammer joined in 1998 as chairman, president, and chief executive officer, while Al Bunte became vice president and chief operating officer. Under Hammer, Commvault developed a substantial enterprise software business and expanded its international presence. Commvault began releasing products aimed at network-storage management in 2000. It completed an initial public offering in 2006 and trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol CVLT. The company moved its headquarters from Oceanport, New Jersey, to the former Fort Monmouth site in Tinton Falls at the end of 2013. Its global footprint includes offices and operations in markets such as China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, France, Germany, and Brazil. The company's offering has evolved from backup software into a broader data-resilience platform. Its capabilities address operational recovery, including routine backup and restoration; cyber recovery, including protection against ransomware and other destructive incidents; and autonomous or cloud-oriented recovery workflows. Commvault also supplies consulting and managed services. Consulting engagements can cover architecture, deployment, implementation, and monitoring, while remote managed services allow Commvault or its service partners to operate the software environment for customers. A significant part of Commvault's strategy has been to extend its capabilities through acquisitions. The purchases of Hedvig, TrapX, and Appranix added software-defined storage, cyber deception and security, and cloud cyber-recovery capabilities. The planned acquisition of Clumio expanded the company's cloud-data backup and recovery portfolio, while the later acquisition of Satori Cyber was intended to strengthen data and artificial-intelligence security. These transactions reflect a shift in the market from traditional backup toward integrated cyber resilience, cloud recovery, data security, and governance. Sanjay Mirchandani became president and chief executive officer in February 2019, succeeding the retiring Hammer; Nick Adamo became chairman of the board. In 2024, Commvault Cloud for Government received FedRAMP certification, supporting use of the service in U.S. government environments. In 2026, the company introduced Commvault Cloud Unified Data Vault, a cloud-native service aimed at protecting S3-based data with air-gapped isolation and recovery-oriented resilience. Commvault remains an active publicly traded specialist in enterprise data protection and cyber-recovery software.

History

Commvault traces its origins to a development group created at Bell Labs in 1988. The group worked on data management, backup, and recovery technologies and was later organized as a business unit within AT&T Network Systems. Following the breakup and reorganization of AT&T, the unit became part of Lucent Technologies. In 1996, it was sold and incorporated as an independent company. Scotty R. Neal served as chief executive during the company's early independent period. A major leadership transition occurred in March 1998, when Bob Hammer joined as chairman, president, and chief executive officer. Al Bunte joined at approximately the same time as vice president and chief operating officer. During the following years, Commvault developed software for enterprise backup, recovery, and storage management. In 2000, it began releasing products aimed specifically at managing network storage, helping establish a broader position than that of a conventional backup-software vendor. Commvault filed for an initial public offering in March 2006 and later became publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker CVLT. Public-company status supported the expansion of its enterprise software business and global operations. By the end of 2013, the company had moved its headquarters from Oceanport, New Jersey, to the former Fort Monmouth site in Tinton Falls. Its international network grew to include offices in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America, including locations in Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai, Israel, France, Germany, and Brazil. In February 2019, Hammer retired as chief executive and was succeeded by Sanjay Mirchandani, who had previously led Puppet, an IT-automation company. Nick Adamo became chairman of the board. Under Mirchandani, Commvault increasingly emphasized cyber resilience, cloud operations, and protection for modern distributed infrastructure. The company pursued this strategy both through product development and acquisitions. In 2019, Commvault agreed to acquire Hedvig, a software-defined storage startup, for a transaction value reported at $225 million; the deal closed in October of that year. In 2022, it acquired TrapX, an Israel-based cybersecurity company. In 2024, it announced the acquisition of Appranix, whose technology focused on cyber recovery in cloud platforms. Later that year, Commvault announced a planned acquisition of Clumio, a provider of autonomous backup and recovery for cloud data. The transaction was expected to be financed from cash on hand and to contribute immediately to recurring revenue and revenue. In 2025, Commvault announced its intention to acquire Satori Cyber, a data and artificial-intelligence security company, and completed the transaction in August. The company's product strategy has developed into a platform model covering operational recovery, cyber recovery, and autonomous recovery. Operational recovery supports routine backup and restoration. Cyber-recovery capabilities are intended to help organizations respond to ransomware, destructive attacks, and compromised infrastructure. Autonomous and cloud-native services address increasingly distributed data estates, including cloud, hyperscale, SaaS, and S3-compatible storage. Commvault also operates consulting and managed-service offerings. Consulting work can include architecture design, implementation, deployment, and monitoring. In remote managed arrangements, the software environment may be operated for customers in production. In June 2024, Commvault Cloud for Government received FedRAMP certification, an important compliance milestone for its U.S. public-sector ambitions. In January 2026, the company introduced Commvault Cloud Unified Data Vault, designed to provide air-gapped protection and resilience for S3-based data. Commvault remains an active publicly traded enterprise data-protection and cybersecurity software company headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.
