Comundo

Comundo is a Swiss organization active in personnel development cooperation (PEZA). It was established as a legal association in 2017 with its headquarters in Lucerne and offices in Fribourg and Bellinzona, taking over the operational work of its two remaining member organizations. Its roots trace back to 1921 and the Missionsgesellschaft Bethlehem in der Schweiz (SMB). In 2020 INTERTEAM joined as a third member, and from 2023 the umbrella structure was replaced by a unified Comundo association structure. Comundo describes itself as the largest PEZA organization in Switzerland. It places professionals in long-term assignments in countries including Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Kenya, Zambia, Colombia and Namibia.

Comundo's work in the Global South has a long tradition, with professional assignments as an effective means of sustainable poverty reduction always at its center. Comundo in its current form is a young organization, but its pillars tell of a history spanning over a hundred years. It began in 1921 with the Missionsgesellschaft Bethlehem in der Schweiz (SMB), which already at that time addressed poverty and suffering in countries of the South. The origins of the 'Allianz Comundo' as an association of the organizations Bethlehem Mission Immensee (BMI), E-CHANGER and Inter-Agire lie in 2013, when the three independent organizations pooled their strengths to noticeably increase their impact on target groups in the assignment countries. However, it was only in 2017, after the association E-CHANGER left, that a legal association 'Comundo' was officially created, with headquarters in Lucerne and two offices in Fribourg and Bellinzona. Comundo took over the operational business of its two remaining member organizations of personnel development cooperation (PEZA). In 2020 INTERTEAM joined as a new third member to strengthen the association. From 2023 the umbrella structure was dissolved and transformed into a unified Comundo association structure. The Comundo association is now supported by individual and collective members. Comundo is today the largest PEZA organization in Switzerland.
