Overview

Containex Containerhandelsgesellschaft m.b.H., stylized as CONTAINEX, is an Austrian company specializing in the trade of containers and mobile space solutions. It is part of the Walter Group and is headquartered in the Industriezentrum Niederösterreich Süd in Wiener Neudorf, Austria. The company was founded in 1981 as an extension of the pallet trading business of LKW Walter, which had begun trading Euro pallets in 1978. Over the decades, Containex expanded its container trading across Europe, serving both business-to-business markets through dealer partners and the Austrian market directly with its own container rental services. The company offers a range of containers, including ISO containers, used containers, and mobile space solutions such as residential containers for temporary accommodation. In the 2009/2010 financial year, Containex generated revenue of 128 million euros and was recognized as a leading Austrian company, receiving the State Award in 2010. It continues to operate as a key player in the European container market.

History

Containex traces its origins to 1978, when LKW Walter began trading Euro pallets. This business field was expanded to include the trade of ISO containers. In 1981, Containex Containerhandelsgesellschaft m.b.H. was founded. The original pallet trading business was discontinued in 1985, but the trade of ISO containers, which at the time were mainly traded as used containers, was greatly expanded. The main markets were Austria and Germany. Between 1985 and 1998, Containex supplied containers to Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Only the Austrian market was developed as a business-to-consumer market with its own container rental service, while other countries were served as business-to-business markets through dealer partners. Since 1998, the business field was expanded to include Italy, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. The company's only branch office is located in Kufstein. In the 2009/2010 financial year, Containex generated revenue of 128 million euros. In 2009, the company reached third place and in 2010 second place among the Big Players of Austria's Leading Companies. In October 2010, the Minister of Economy Reinhold Mitterlehner awarded the company the State Award. In 2014, Containex supported municipalities in Germany in accommodating asylum seekers by providing residential containers that can be quickly assembled and have low operating costs.
