History
CovalX originated as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. Ryan Wenzel, Alexis Nazabal, and Urs Matter founded the company in 2005 under the name CovalX GmbH. Its formation was connected to the commercialization of a mass-spectrometry approach for studying high-mass molecular species and protein interactions. In January 2007, CovalX changed its legal form from GmbH to AG. The change was intended to support the admission of additional investors and represented an early step in formalizing the company’s corporate and financing structure. During its first phase, CovalX concentrated on developing a proprietary High Mass MALDI platform. The technology was designed to extend mass-spectrometric analysis toward large protein assemblies and noncovalent protein-protein interactions, areas that are important in therapeutic-protein research but can be difficult to examine directly. The company’s activities later broadened from technology development to commercial instrumentation. In 2011, CovalX created CovalX Instruments Incorporated as a wholly owned US subsidiary in the Boston-area region. The subsidiary supported manufacturing and instrument testing, as well as sales and customer support for CovalX hardware. Establishing a North American operating base gave the company a direct route to customers in one of the world’s largest biotechnology and pharmaceutical research clusters. From 2009 onward, CovalX increasingly developed an analytical-services business. Through contract research laboratories and locations in Switzerland, France, and the United States, it offered measurements and characterization studies for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients. This transition made the company not only an instrument developer but also a service provider able to execute specialized studies for external research programs. CovalX’s service model brought together High Mass MALDI with other mass-spectrometry methods. Hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry was used for investigating aspects of protein conformation and structural dynamics, while cross-linking mass spectrometry supported the study of molecular proximity and protein architecture. The company described applications including epitope mapping, de novo sequencing, and protein-interaction analysis. These capabilities were particularly relevant to biologics developers working on antibodies and other complex therapeutic proteins. The company received the CTI Start-up Label from the Swiss Confederation’s Commission for Technology and Innovation in April 2006. This recognition came during its early commercialization period, before the 2007 conversion to AG status. CovalX’s platform and related work subsequently appeared in scientific publications and patent documents. Research citing or involving the technology covered subjects such as comparative antibody epitope-mapping methods, engineered immune-cell therapies, and targeted vaccine-delivery systems. The available reference material does not document a later acquisition, public listing, dissolution, or confirmed current operating status. It also does not identify later executives, ownership, financial results, or an official current website. The documented historical record therefore supports describing CovalX as a Swiss-founded analytical technology and biotherapeutic-characterization business, while leaving its present corporate status unresolved.

Products and positioning
A specialized analytical technology and contract research provider for biotherapeutics, differentiated by high-mass MALDI mass spectrometry and complementary structural and interaction-analysis methods.
Mass-spectrometry platform
High Mass MALDI
CovalX’s proprietary High Mass MALDI platform was developed for the direct and rapid analysis of high-mass molecular species, including protein complexes and protein-protein interactions in solution. It formed the technological basis for the company’s early instrument activities and later characterization services.
Contract research and analytical services · 2009
Biotherapeutic characterization services
CovalX provided analytical characterization services for biotherapeutic development programs. The work used mass spectrometry and complementary methods to investigate therapeutic proteins, antibodies, molecular interactions, structure, and binding-related properties.
Biotherapeutic characterization application
Epitope mapping
Epitope-mapping services were intended to help researchers determine the regions of an antigen recognized by an antibody or other binding molecule. This application supports antibody discovery, characterization, comparability, and therapeutic development.
Structural mass spectrometry service
HDX-MS
Hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry was among the complementary techniques used by CovalX for studying protein conformation, structural changes, and interaction-related behavior in biotherapeutic research.
Protein-interaction mass spectrometry service
XL-MS
Cross-linking mass spectrometry was used to provide information about spatial relationships within or between proteins. In CovalX’s service portfolio, it complemented High Mass MALDI and other analytical methods for protein-structure and interaction studies.
