Overview

Crapoulet Records is a French independent record label dedicated to punk rock and hardcore punk. Founded in February 1998 by Olivier Crapoulet under the name Rudeboi! Records, the label was reborn around 2005 as Crapoulet Records with a stronger focus on punk hardcore. Based in Marseille since 2011, the label operates on a DIY (Do It Ourselves) ethos, favoring co-productions over solo releases for both practical and ethical reasons. It releases music without constraints of country, format, or beliefs, encompassing politically engaged, anarchist, libertarian, and even Muslim-member bands, particularly from Southeast Asia. The label also runs a mail-order catalog (VPC) offering a wide selection of genres and countries at modest prices, and publishes the free fanzine Capybara Social Club. With over 250 releases by 2021, Crapoulet Records maintains intellectual property with the bands, who receive 20% of the produced volume as revenue. It has two sub-labels: Ar C'hrapoulek (Brest) and Der Crapület (Germany). The label organized the Crapoufest festival in Marseille in 2015 and 2016.

History

Crapoulet Records was founded in February 1998 by Olivier Crapoulet under the name Rudeboi! Records. The label's first project was a co-production of the debut EP by Skadichats, a ska punk band from Landes, proposed by Youn of Rural Muzik. This led to numerous productions and co-productions. Rudeboi! Records ceased operations in 2004. Around 2005, Olivier decided to revive his label as Crapoulet Records, with a sharper focus on punk hardcore. He explained the transition: 'The transition from the first [label] to the next happened because people were inventing stories (the punk scene was a bit more violent at the time) about conflicts, about what a real punk should listen to.' Crapoulet Records releases bands from the punk movement, practicing musical and ideological eclecticism, including politically engaged, anarchist, libertarian, and even Muslim-member bands (often from Southeast Asia). In 2011, Crapoulet and the label moved to Marseille. In 2015 and 2016, the label organized its own music festival, Crapoufest, in Marseille. There are two sub-labels: Ar C'hrapoulek, based in Brest, and Der Crapület, in Germany. By 2021, the label had published over 250 sound recordings. Intellectual property remains with the bands, who receive 20% of the produced volume as revenue (to cover studio costs, among other things). The label employs independent talent scouts who bring promising bands, especially from abroad, to the attention of the label's managers.
