Overview

Culture pour tous is a Quebec cultural organization. Its stated vision is to be a key partner and vector of citizens' commitment to culture and their participation in the development of society through it. Its mission is to deploy accessible, inspiring and inclusive strategies and actions aimed at making culture known and loved as an essential factor in the fulfillment and health of communities, and to foster the commitment of organizations and citizens to and with culture. Its history traces to the 1996 Sommet sur l'économie et l'emploi, when a major project for the democratization of and awareness about arts and culture was presented by leaders of Quebec cultural circles; the first Journées de la culture were held in September 1997 under the theme "Ça manquait à notre culture."

History

At the 1996 Sommet sur l'économie et l'emploi, a major project for the democratization of and awareness about arts and culture was presented by leaders of Quebec cultural circles. The first public and private financial commitments arrived a few months later, and the cultural milieu prepared the first edition of the Journées de la culture, held in September 1997 under the theme "Ça manquait à notre culture." Five hundred organizations, artists and artisans welcomed more than 160,000 visitors. On June 17, 1997, the Assemblée nationale du Québec unanimously adopted a motion proclaiming the last Friday of September and the two following days of each year as Journées nationales de la culture; to date, 625 municipalities have officially adopted a resolution to that effect. Another important date noted is 2004, with the creation of the Carnet de la culture.
