History
Culturgest is based in Lisbon, Portugal. Its programme includes music, theatre, visual arts, performance, talks and lectures, and cinema, with seasons announced on its official site such as 'Rehearsing the Future' running from September to January 2027, and events including the Alkantara Festival. The Caixa Geral de Depósitos art collection began in 1983 with acquisitions following guidelines devised by the board of administrators. After a decade, the entire collection was analysed in parallel with other public and institutional art collections existing in Portugal; as a result, it was decided to favour artistic production after the 1980s, with a recommendation that previous works by artists consecrated in the 1960s or 1970s should also be included. At the turn of the year 2000 the scope of the collection was broadened to contemplate a wider sense of all things Luso, paying special attention to contemporary art production of Brazil, Mozambique, Angola and Cape Verde in addition to Portuguese art. After 2004, acquisitions tended to support a deeper understanding of the artists represented and of their careers, resulting in comprehensive clusters of the same artist. As of 2006, Culturgest has been put in charge of studying, promoting and curating the Collection, which comprises approximately 1,800 works including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, installation and engraving. Culturgest presents a new online project dedicated to the stories from the CGD Art Collection on Google Arts & Culture, with chapters released weekly between March 23 and May 11, covering the collection's key moments from its beginnings in 1983 to the present day.
