Overview
The cusanus trägergesellschaft trier mbH (ctt) is a modern, church-affiliated provider in the healthcare and social welfare sector, headquartered in Trier, Germany. It describes itself as a strong partner in medicine, nursing, youth welfare and more, with facilities in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia. As a sponsoring company (Trägergesellschaft), ctt handles the organizational, legal and economic tasks in the background, ensuring stability, uniform standards and the security its individual institutions need to fulfill their responsibilities for people on site. The company is a non-profit entity pursuing directly charitable and church purposes, and its registered office is in Trier. ctt traces its roots to the caritas trägergesellschaft trier e.V., founded in 1987 on the initiative of the then Bishop of Trier, Hermann Josef Spital. For more than two decades it operated as a registered non-profit association. In June 2009 it was converted into a GmbH and has since operated under the name cusanus trägergesellschaft trier mbH, retaining the abbreviation ctt. The name "cusanus" commemorates the theologian, philosopher and humanist Nicholas of Cusa (Nikolaus von Kues), who combined faith and reason, placed the human being at the center and courageously broke new ground. The organization is a corporate member of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Trier and a company of the Hildegard-Stiftung Trier. With roughly 2,600 employees (full-time equivalents), it maintains facilities across three federal states, with a focus on Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Its activities span acute-care hospitals, nursing homes, a rehabilitation clinic, medical care centers (MVZ), a youth welfare center and training and further education centers. Through its subsidiary ctt Reha-Fachkliniken GmbH, additional rehabilitation facilities in Bad Bergzabern, Bad Kreuznach and Weiskirchen belong to the group. In recent years ctt has been involved in innovative projects such as DIKOM, a mobile geriatric diagnostics unit presented at the Caritas Hospital Lebach and at the Hauptstadtkongress, and it has supported a petition to secure hospital care. The company also runs a management workshop program and hosts events such as the Dementia Symposium. Its history includes a major crisis in the late 1990s known as the "Doerfert affair," which led to significant governance reforms and financial stabilization by an alliance of church sponsors.
History
The cusanus trägergesellschaft trier mbH (ctt) was founded in 1987 on the initiative of Hermann Josef Spital, then Bishop of Trier, as the caritas trägergesellschaft trier e.V. It operated as a registered non-profit association until June 2009, when it was converted into a GmbH and renamed cusanus trägergesellschaft trier mbH, retaining the abbreviation ctt. The name "cusanus" honors Nicholas of Cusa (Nikolaus von Kues), a theologian, philosopher and humanist who combined faith and reason and placed the human being at the center. Under the manager Hans-Joachim Doerfert, the organization grew within a decade into a group with 42 institutions, 9,000 employees and annual revenue of 500 million euros. However, investigations into fraud and breach of trust in 58 cases led to Doerfert's arrest in 1999. He was initially sentenced by the Landgericht Koblenz to seven years and then by the Landgericht München to ten years imprisonment. The criminal activities at the top of the group caused a loss of 50 million euros, plunging the healthcare group into financial difficulties. This episode became known as the "Doerfert affair." In the aftermath of the affair and the criminal prosecution of former board members, the association's statutes were amended to include more effective control mechanisms through a supervisory board with extensive powers. The association was then led by a three-member board appointed by the members' assembly for a five-year term. The financial difficulties caused by the affair were overcome by an alliance of church sponsors, including the Franciscan Sisters of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels and the Merciful Brothers of Maria Hilf Trier, among others. This alliance worked from 2003 to stabilize ctt, culminating in the 2009 conversion into a GmbH. Today ctt is a corporate member of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Trier and a company of the Hildegard-Stiftung Trier. With around 2,600 employees (full-time equivalents), it operates facilities in three federal states, focusing on Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Its activities include acute-care hospitals (Cusanus-Krankenhaus Bernkastel-Kues, St.-Clemens-Hospital Geldern, Caritas-Krankenhaus Lebach, St. Elisabeth-Krankenhaus Wittlich), 17 nursing homes, the Gelderland-Klinik rehabilitation clinic in Geldern, medical care centers (MVZ) in Bernkastel-Kues and Geldern, a youth welfare center in Aach, and three training and further education centers. Through its subsidiary ctt Reha-Fachkliniken GmbH, additional rehabilitation facilities in Bad Bergzabern, Bad Kreuznach and Weiskirchen belong to the group. In recent years, ctt has engaged in innovative projects such as DIKOM, a mobile geriatric diagnostics unit, and has supported a petition to secure hospital care. It also runs a management workshop and hosts events like the Dementia Symposium.
