Overview
Cycorp is the provider of the Cyc platform, described as Machine Reasoning AI that uses codified human common sense and knowledge rather than patterns and statistics. The Cyc platform combines a common sense ontology and knowledge base with a powerful reasoning engine and natural language interfaces, used for vertical enterprise products and by third-party developers. Based in Austin, Texas, Cycorp states that its software products are trusted by 200+ hospitals, with products addressing hospital operations such as autonomous leveling/charge capture, denial management, post-acute care forecasting, and staffing.
History
Cycorp was founded by AI visionary Doug Lenat, who understood that brittle expert systems and machine learning AI trained on big data to spot correlations were not enough. With the help of an Act of Congress in the mid-eighties, he launched Cycorp as a Manhattan Project-like effort to build a step-by-step logical reasoning system. Over the next decade, $100M R&D dollars were poured into Cyc. By the time he founded Cycorp in the mid-nineties as a company to Cyc, Doug was already one of the leading computer science and AI experts in the world. He had served as a professor of computer science at both Carnegie-Mellon University and Stanford University, worked with Bill Gates to establish Microsoft Research Labs, and is the only person to have served on the technical advisory boards of both Apple and Microsoft. He received the bi-annual IJCAI Computers and Thought Award, the highest honor in Artificial Intelligence.
