Cypress Lawn

Cypress Lawn is a funeral home, cremation provider, and memorial park serving the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1892 by a group of civic-minded men led by Hamden Holmes Noble, it was established as a garden cemetery a dozen miles south of San Francisco. The grounds span 150 acres and include an internationally certified arboretum. Cypress Lawn offers complete funeral, cremation, and burial services, and operates four locations in Colma, San Mateo, Half Moon Bay, and Burlingame.

Cypress Lawn was founded in 1892 by a group of civic-minded men led by Hamden Holmes Noble. The inspiration began with a carriage ride during which Noble, riding past San Francisco's Laurel Hill Cemetery, was urged by a friend to create a solution to the problem of deteriorating cemeteries. The new cemetery was established a dozen miles south of San Francisco, a safe distance from the city's political reach, which later banned all burials and passed a law 'evicting' the dead from San Francisco. As a result, over 35,000 people were later reinterred at Cypress Lawn. Noble traveled to research cemetery styles and discovered the rural and lawn park cemeteries along the East Coast. What emerged at Cypress Lawn was 150 acres adorned by carefully selected horticulture to create a beautiful and serene garden. Today, the grounds also include a majestic internationally certified arboretum. Cypress Lawn became and still is the final resting place for many prominent and powerful families across San Francisco and California. Over the years, magnificent monuments and edifices were built to memorialize the achievements of the men and women who shaped the history of the Golden State. Cypress Lawn opened Northern California's first crematory in 1892 and is the owner and operator of its own onsite cremation facility.
