Overview

The Czech Management Association (Česká manažerská asociace, ČMA) is a professional membership organisation based in the Czech Republic. It describes itself as the only association in the country that focuses exclusively on managers, entrepreneurs and leaders regardless of their profession. Its stated mission is to connect managers and to develop their professional abilities, knowledge and skills, including their capacity to lead teams. The platform is used by roughly 400 members, of whom about one hundred are collective members. The association was founded on 12 May 1990, building on the tradition of professional managers' associations from the First Republic, whose members included figures such as Tomáš Baťa. It organises national and international conferences on management-related topics and arranges meetings between the managerial, business, political, state administration and local government spheres. On the international level it promotes the interests of Czech managers abroad and has been a member of CEC European Managers in Brussels since May 2019. ČMA runs a broad range of events each year, especially club meetings and professional conferences, and it identifies, awards and promotes role models of the managerial elite through the Manager of the Year (Manažer roku) competition. The competition was founded in 1993 by Ing. František Jezdinský, CSc., as the beginning of a tradition of recognising representatives of management in the Czech Republic. Winners are chosen by a ten-member evaluation committee of experts from various fields, assessing exceptional results in their fields, support for company growth and development, and the creation of an inspiring environment for colleagues. The association cultivates the Czech managerial environment through hundreds of educational events and professional meetings annually, including seminars, workshops and conferences, foreign business missions, excursions to Czech manufacturing companies, and cultural and sporting events. It supports educational programmes for young entrepreneurs and start-ups, and since 2010 has been active in the Mateřské technické školky project aimed at developing technical thinking, creativity, manual skills and verbal abilities. It is a partner of the World Economic Forum, cooperating on the preparation and publication of the annual Report on International Competitiveness of the Czech Republic. ČMA is a founding member of the Czech Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD), the national branch of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). It also engages in charitable activities, regularly supporting the Srdcerváči project for handicapped workers and co-organising summer camps at Vilémov Castle for children from children's homes in cooperation with the ZET Foundation. Nationwide coverage is provided by five regional clubs and ten sectoral clubs, and the association's supreme body is the Assembly of Delegates, which elects a nine-member presidium. Ing. Petr Kazík, Ph.D. became president following the 2020 elections.

History

The Czech Management Association (Česká manažerská asociace, ČMA) was founded on 12 May 1990. It consciously built on the tradition of professional managers' associations from the First Republic, whose members included a number of notable figures, among them Tomáš Baťa, who also cooperated with ČMA. From its foundation, the association's mission has been to connect managers and to develop their professional abilities, knowledge and skills, including their ability to lead work teams. In 1993, Ing. František Jezdinský, CSc. founded the Manager of the Year (Manažer roku) competition, which became the association's best-known activity and the beginning of a tradition of recognising representatives of management in the Czech Republic. The competition seeks out and awards successful managerial personalities active in the Czech Republic. Winners are selected by a ten-member evaluation committee composed of experts from various fields; criteria include exceptional results in their fields, support for the growth and development of the company, and the creation of an inspiring environment for colleagues. Objectivity and regularity of the competition are guaranteed by an Evaluation Committee of experts, while a National Committee composed of representatives of the competition's announcer, sponsors and cooperating organisations, and category guarantors, participates in evaluating the finalists. Over the decades, ČMA has expanded its activities into a broad platform. It organises national and international conferences on management-related topics and arranges meetings between the managerial, business, political, state administration and local government spheres. It cultivates the Czech managerial environment through hundreds of educational events and professional meetings annually, especially seminars, workshops and conferences, foreign business missions, excursions to Czech manufacturing companies, as well as cultural and sporting events. For 2019 it declared five priorities, including intergenerational communication, a new lifestyle and support for sustainable development. On the international level, the association promotes the interests of Czech managers abroad. Since May 2019 it has been a member of the European managers' association CEC European Managers in Brussels, where it expands partnership relations with other Czech and foreign professional and interest associations, organisations and chambers of commerce. It is also a partner of the World Economic Forum, with which it cooperates on the preparation and publication of the annual Report on International Competitiveness of the Czech Republic. ČMA is a founding member of the Czech Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD), the national branch of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which was founded twenty years ago by 200 prominent world companies. Members of the Czech CBCSD branch have direct access from WBCSD to information on sustainable development. The association supports educational programmes for young entrepreneurs and start-ups, especially in cooperation with Czech Television and the Czech Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD); it took part in the television series "Czechia and Climate Change – Threat or Opportunity?" and in the project "Searching for the Exceptionality of Children's Leaders". Since 2010 it has been actively involved in the Mateřské technické školky project, focused on developing technical thinking, creativity, manual skills and verbal abilities. ČMA also engages in publishing. In 2018, in cooperation with the Mladá fronta publishing house and author Kamil Miketa, it published the book "100 Years from the Beginning of Free Enterprise in Czechoslovakia", subtitled "Managers with a Lion Cub". The publication presents the stories of First Republic and contemporary managerial personalities. The book was ceremonially christened on 28 October 2018 in the Obecní dům, the place where the history of the republic was born. ČMA had published three previous "Managers with a Lion Cub" books. In terms of structure, nationwide coverage is ensured by five regional clubs – Prague, North-East Bohemia, North-West Bohemia, Central Bohemia, and the Moravia club – and ten sectoral clubs focused, for example, on women managers, young managers, public administration or prognosticians. In September 2018 the Club of Rivers of Health was established. ČMA seeks to address foreign-language managers working in the Czech Republic through the International Manager Club. The supreme body of the association is the Assembly of Delegates, composed of 31 delegates elected by individual regional and sectoral clubs in the ratio of one delegate per ten club members. It last met on 24 June 2020 in Prague and elected a nine-member presidium, which then decided on a new president, Ing. Petr Kazík, Ph.D. The presidium includes vice-presidents Adam Liška, Vilém Vrba, Ivo Gajdoš and Olga Girstlová, members Tomáš Macků, Olga Kupec, Stanislav Moural and Vadim Petrov, and honorary president Pavel Kafka. Other bodies include the Club Council, composed of the chairs of individual clubs, and the Expert Council, a top advisory and consultative body of the presidium. The association also regularly supports the charitable project Srdcerváči for handicapped workers and, in cooperation with the ZET Foundation, co-organises summer camps at Vilémov Castle for children from children's homes.
