The foundation was established in 1990 by brothers Peter and Max Dätwyler with private funds as part of the succession arrangement for Dätwyler Holding AG. History

The Dätwyler-Stiftung was founded in 1990 by brothers Peter Dätwyler (1926-1993) and Max Dätwyler (1929-2020) with private funds. The founding took place as part of the succession arrangement for Dätwyler Holding AG. This succession solution, unique in Switzerland to date, was made possible by a generous waiver of assets by Peter and Max Dätwyler and their families. The two brothers contributed their holdings in Dätwyler Holding AG to the newly founded Pema Holding AG, which has since been the majority shareholder of Dätwyler Holding AG. Sole owner of Pema Holding AG became Dätwyler Führungs AG. The shareholder group consists of members of the board of directors of Dätwyler Holding AG. Significant dividend claims on Pema Holding AG were granted as founder benefits (today 'special benefits') in favor of Peter and Max Dätwyler. These claims were subsequently assigned to the Dätwyler-Stiftung. They form an essential source of the foundation's assets. Through inflows from Pema Holding AG and generous donations from Dr. Max Dätwyler, the assets grew steadily. To date, the foundation has distributed over 21.5 million Swiss francs in grants. The Dätwyler-Stiftung is a non-profit foundation. The company Dätwyler and the Dätwyler-Stiftung operate independently of each other.
