Overview
The Dürrensteinhütte (Italian: Rifugio Vallandro) is a mountain hut and guesthouse situated at 2,040 metres on the Plätzwiese high plateau in the Pragser Dolomiten (Pragser Dolomites) of South Tyrol, Italy. It lies within the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, on the territory of the municipality of Prags (Braies). The hut serves as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding peaks, including the Dürrenstein to the north and the Hohe Gaisl to the west. It is also a stage point on the Dolomiten-Höhenweg (Dolomites High Trail) and a starting point for excursions to the Rossalpe and the summit of the Dürrenstein. The current building was constructed between 1968 and 1970 by Tristano Costantini from Niederdorf (Villabassa), just a few metres east of the ruins of the former Werk Plätzwiese, an Austro-Hungarian fortification that had fallen into disrepair after World War I. The hut underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2002. Today it offers five comfortable rooms for two to four people with private bathrooms, as well as rustic dormitory sleeping quarters for up to ten people. Amenities include a rich breakfast, regional cuisine, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The hut is known for its stunning panoramic location on the southern edge of the Plätzwiese, with views of the Dolomites. It is easily accessible via a gentle, family-friendly path through the nature park. The official website is vallandro.it, and the hut operates under a cash-only payment policy for accommodation.
History
The Dürrensteinhütte (Rifugio Vallandro) is a mountain hut in the Pragser Dolomiten of South Tyrol, Italy. Its history is closely tied to the strategic importance of the Plätzwiese plateau. In the late 19th century, the Werk Plätzwiese, part of the Austrian fortification line along the border with Italy, was built in the immediate vicinity of the present-day hut. After World War I, the fortification fell into ruin. In 1968–1970, Tristano Costantini from Niederdorf (Villabassa) constructed the Dürrensteinhütte just a few metres east of the ruined fort. The hut was comprehensively renovated in 2002. Since then, it has operated as a hospitality business offering accommodation and food to hikers, climbers, and families visiting the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. It is a stage point on the Dolomiten-Höhenweg and a base for ascents of the Dürrenstein and Hohe Gaisl.
