Overview

The Dachsteinsüdwandhütte (also written Dachstein Südwandhütte) is a private alpine mountain hut in the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein in the Austrian federal state of Styria. It sits at an elevation of 1,871 m above sea level (the operator's own page states 1,910 m) directly south of the Hoher Dachstein, whose imposing south face rises above the hut. Because it is easily reachable — roughly a 35-minute walk from the Türlwandhütte at the valley station of the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car (1,700 m) — it is a popular destination for day visitors and hikers as well as a base for climbers tackling the Dachstein south wall, one of the most demanding walls in the Alps. The hut was built in 1924 by the Austria branch of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein (German and Austrian Alpine Club) and is today in private ownership. It is operated by the innkeepers Christian and Tamara Schrempf. The hut offers overnight accommodation in double or triple rooms as well as dormitory mattress places, with breakfast or half-board available. Rooms are equipped with two sheets, two wool blankets and a pillow; dormitory places with one sheet, one wool blanket and a pillow. There is a shared washroom with warm water but no shower, and towels are not provided. Reservations are taken by telephone or email. The Dachsteinsüdwandhütte is not a partner of the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard. It lies within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt–Dachstein/Salzkammergut and within protected areas, with the Dachstein south wall and the Edelgrieß glacier nature monuments beginning directly to the north. The hut serves as a starting point for numerous hikes, including the Dachsteinumrundung, the Pernerweg through the Tor, and the via ferrata routes "Anna" and "Johann", as well as climbing routes in the Dachstein south wall.

History

The Dachsteinsüdwandhütte was built in 1924 by the Austria branch of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein (German and Austrian Alpine Club). It was established as an alpine refuge below the south face of the Hoher Dachstein, in what is now the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein in the Austrian state of Styria. The hut is today in private ownership and is operated as a Privathütte (private hut) by the innkeepers Christian and Tamara Schrempf. Over the decades it has served as a base for hikers and climbers, and its easy accessibility from the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car valley station (about 35 minutes on foot) has made it a much-visited destination for day guests as well as an overnight stop. The hut lies within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt–Dachstein/Salzkammergut and within several protected areas, with the Dachstein south wall and the Edelgrieß glacier nature monuments beginning directly to the north.
