Overview

Dainen Co., Ltd. (ダイネン株式会社) is a Japanese diversified industrial company headquartered in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. Its origins trace to 1938, when founder Takezo Hayahara established Daiichi Nenryo Shokai in Himeji's Shikama district as a manufacturer and seller of briquette and bean coal for household fuel. The business was reorganized as Daiichi Nenryo Co., Ltd. in 1949 and later renamed Daiichi Nenryo Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1959, before eventually adopting the Dainen name. Over the decades it expanded from solid household fuels into liquefied petroleum (LP) gas distribution, steelmaking carbon and auxiliary materials, and environmental products such as activated carbon. Today Dainen operates through several internal divisions. The Fuel Division sells LP gas and kerosene and offers home renovation and related housing equipment, backed by a 24-hour, 365-day safety and monitoring system. The Tetsugen (steel materials) Division manufactures and sells carburizing agents, slag-forming agents, and other auxiliary materials used in converters and electric furnaces. The Environmental Division produces and sells activated carbon and other industrial chemicals for pollution control and air and water purification. A Technology Division pursues research and development in energy, resources, and environmental fields, and a Group Business segment covers affiliated operations. The company is privately held, with stated capital of 100 million yen and 229 employees (362 group-wide). Its representative director and president is Yoshinori Sadanobu. Dainen maintains a nationwide network of sales offices and factories, including locations in Himeji, Ako, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Kanda, Fukuoka, and elsewhere, and it has historically operated group companies in trading, distribution, and furnace-related services, as well as joint ventures in China. The company positions itself around reliability, safety, and environmental contribution, and continues to describe its mission as "creating our future."

History

Dainen Co., Ltd. traces its history to November 1938, when founder Takezo Hayahara established Daiichi Nenryo Shokai (第一燃料商会) in Himeji City, Shikama Ward, Hyogo Prefecture. The company began as a sole proprietorship manufacturing and selling briquette and bean coal for household fuel. Hayahara, described as a self-made entrepreneur, expanded the business into public transport fuel and pursued new product development, steering the company through the turbulent post-war years. In April 1949, the business was reorganized as Daiichi Nenryo Co., Ltd. (第一燃料株式会社) and became a designated supplier to the Japanese National Railways, beginning production of pitch briquettes for locomotives. In February 1950, a Yonago factory was completed in Tottori Prefecture; in February 1954 it was expanded and relocated to Sakaiminato in the same prefecture, becoming the Sakai factory. A Tokyo office opened in June 1956, followed by a Wakamatsu office in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, in October. In January 1957, construction began on a bean coal factory with advanced equipment in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, which was completed in May 1958. In June 1959, the company changed its name to Daiichi Nenryo Kogyo Co., Ltd. (第一燃料工業株式会社). The following year it entered the liquid fuel (LPG) business. While LPG sales initially faced intense competition, the existing household briquette and bean coal divisions grew steadily, and new product development gained market recognition. In May 1961, a Himeji sales office opened alongside the start of LPG handling, followed by an Ako office in October 1962. In October 1965, a Kokura office opened and the Wakamatsu office was integrated into it. The head office building was completed in March 1966, and Sendai and Okayama offices opened in November. In April 1968, a Takasaki office opened in Gunma Prefecture, and in July an Ishinomaki factory was completed in Miyagi Prefecture, integrating the Sendai office. In April 1970, the Takasaki office and Tokyo branch were merged into a Tokyo sales office. In July 1973, the Sakai factory was suspended as pitch briquette production ended. In February 1975, a Kanda office opened in Fukuoka Prefecture, and in July 1976 a Kakogawa branch was established. In May 1977, responding to a request from the Pollution Prevention Corporation related to buffer green space, the company began relocating its Himeji factory. In April 1978, the old head office building and Himeji factory were relocated to 3001 Nakajima, Shikama Ward, Himeji City. Marking its 40th anniversary, the new Himeji head office factory with a state-of-the-art briquette production line was completed. By then the company had expanded from a small workshop into five divisions—fuel, carbon materials, electronics, technology development, and housing—with three factories, three subsidiaries, eight sales offices and branches nationwide, and a distribution network of about 3,500 stores. In April 1987, Dainen Tsusho Co., Ltd., a trading company, was established, and in October an LPG 24-hour central monitoring center (DTN365) was founded. In June 1989, Dainen Furnace Co., Ltd. was established to undertake operation and maintenance of the Ace Plan, and in December Dainen Delivery Center Co., Ltd. was founded. In April 1991, a Himeji branch opened. In July 1992, a joint venture, Taiyuan Daiichi Nenryo Carburizing Material Co., Ltd., was established in China. In October 1993, Dainen Tsusho and Dainen Furnace merged equally to form Dainen Sangyo Co., Ltd., which then established Tianjin Daiichi Nenryo Sangyo as a Japan-China joint venture in Tianjin, China, and opened a Tokyo office. In January 1996, Dainen Kikaku Co., Ltd. was established to begin broadcasting operations. In March 1997, the company entered the treatment chemical field in response to stricter regulations on dioxin emissions from incinerator exhaust gas, expanding its environmental business. In later years, the company continued to operate under the Dainen name, with divisions for fuel, steel materials, environment, and technology. It remains headquartered in Himeji and maintains a network of sales offices and factories across Japan.
