Overview

Damen Yachting is a Dutch yacht builder headquartered in Vlissingen, Netherlands. It describes itself as the master yacht builders behind Amels superyachts, Xplorer expedition yachts, Yacht Support vessels and large yacht refits, and states that it has delivered almost 100 superyachts for both private and charter use. Its core yacht building business focuses on a proven standardised technical platform, ocean-going capability, next generation technology, craftsmanship and quality. The company traces its yacht building heritage to 1918, when Amels began as a boat building business in the north of the Netherlands; in 1991 the Damen family acquired Amels and retained the name. Damen Yachting's head office is on a site with a long shipbuilding history in Vlissingen, and its Vlissingen City yard is the former Royal Schelde yard, acquired by Damen in 2000. Beyond new build, it provides large yacht refit and life-cycle management services and a Customer Care team offering warranty management and life-cycle support to its fleet worldwide.

History

Damen Yachting's own account of its history begins with the shipbuilding heritage of its Vlissingen site: before Vlissingen officially became a city in 1315 it was a thriving fishing port on the North Sea, and from the 14th century it became increasingly important as a centre for building warships for the Dutch Admiralty and trading vessels for the Dutch West India Company. Around 1688 the shipyard complex was expanded. In 1918 Amels began as a boat building business in the north of the Netherlands, delivering around 100 vessels of up to 20 metres from a small shipyard in the centre of Makkum, from wooden fishing boats to steel tugboats. The yard later moved to build larger commercial ships and coasters, and in the mid-late 1970s diversified into high-value luxury yachts, starting with KATALINA. In 1991 the Damen family acquired Amels, retaining the name, which was by then synonymous with luxury yacht building. The Makkum shipyard remained operational for the following 14 years before a new home was established at larger facilities in Vlissingen. Damen's Vlissingen City yard is the former Royal Schelde yard, acquired by Damen in 2000. Damen Yachting states that it has been building yachts since 1918 and that it has delivered almost 100 superyachts for both private and charter use.
