Overview

Dan Uzans Mindefond (The Dan Uzan Memorial Foundation) is a Danish charitable foundation created in memory of Dan Uzan, who was killed outside the Copenhagen synagogue in February 2015. The foundation was established by the Uzan family to honour his memory and to continue the values and lifestyle he embodied. Its stated purpose is to support a range of activities and charitable causes that reflect Dan's values, such as sports initiatives for young people and recognition of volunteers who make a special effort. The foundation also aims, as far as possible, to support projects in Dan's name. The foundation is rooted in Denmark and operates primarily within Danish Jewish community and broader Danish society. It accepts donations via bank transfer to Det Jødiske Samfund I Danmark (The Jewish Community in Denmark) and via PayPal. The foundation's website provides information in Danish, English, and Hebrew, reflecting the family's wish to reach a wide community of supporters. Dan Uzan was born on 2 June 1977 and grew up in Hvidovre, a suburb of Copenhagen. He attended the Jewish kindergarten and school, Carolineskolen, and from an early age played football for the Jewish sports club Hakoah, where he was a goalkeeper. He participated in five Maccabi Games with the Danish Hakoah football team. Later he took up basketball, playing as a center, and in 2010 joined the veteran team Høbas in Hørsholm, where he also became active on the board. From the age of 17, he volunteered for the Jewish guard corps, standing watch until he was killed outside the synagogue in Copenhagen in the night of 15 February 2015. The foundation serves as a lasting tribute to Dan Uzan's commitment to sport, community, and volunteerism. It channels donations into projects that mirror his values, particularly youth sports and the recognition of volunteers. While it is a small, family-initiated organisation, it represents a significant memorial initiative within the Danish Jewish community and beyond.

History

Dan Uzans Mindefond was established in 2015 following the death of Dan Uzan, who was killed outside the Copenhagen synagogue in the night of 15 February 2015. The Uzan family, overwhelmed by the flow of sympathy, warmth and flowers sent to them, expressed heartfelt gratitude and decided to create an organisation in Dan's name to honour his memory. In lieu of flowers, they asked supporters to contribute to the Dan Uzan Memorial Foundation. The foundation's purpose is to create a basis for and support a range of activities and charitable causes that reflect Dan's values and lifestyle, such as sports initiatives for young people and recognition of volunteers who make a special effort. It also aims to support projects in Dan's name as far as possible. Donations are accepted via bank transfer to Det Jødiske Samfund I Danmark (The Jewish Community in Denmark) and via PayPal. Dan Uzan was born on 2 June 1977 and grew up in Hvidovre, a suburb of Copenhagen. He attended the Jewish kindergarten and school, Carolineskolen. From the age of 4-5 he played football for the Jewish sports club Hakoah, as a goalkeeper, and participated in five Maccabi Games with the Danish Hakoah football team. After finishing high school (HF), he worked for a few years before starting economics studies at the University of Copenhagen. He loved all forms of sport; he also played some handball. In the summer of 1996 he attended a basketball camp in Hørsholm, which began his basketball career. He played center and was characterised as "the working man", helping on and off the court. In 2010 he joined the veteran team Høbas in Hørsholm, where he also became active on the board. At the age of 17, he asked his parents for permission to volunteer for the Jewish guard corps, as one normally had to be 18 to stand guard. He stood guard ever since, until he was killed outside the synagogue in Copenhagen in the night of 15 February 2015. The foundation continues his legacy by channelling support to causes he cared about, particularly youth sports and volunteer recognition. It remains a small, family-driven memorial initiative within the Danish Jewish community.
