Overview
DANIEL AGUILO PANISELLO, S. A. is the legal entity behind Saica Group, a Spanish industrial group that has developed sustainable solutions in paper and packaging manufacturing and in waste management and recovery for more than eight decades. The group traces its origins to 1943, when Saica was founded as Sociedad Anónima Industrias Celulosa Aragonesa in Zaragoza, Spain, starting with a paper production plant and six workers. From that base it grew into an integrated paper-and-packaging business, adding cardboard packaging and integrated waste management operations from 1975 onward. Today Saica Group is organised around four main business areas: Saica Paper, which manufactures 100% recycled paper for corrugated cardboard; Saica Pack, which provides corrugated cardboard packaging solutions; Saica Flex, which supplies flexible packaging; and Saica Natur, which offers environmental services and waste management aimed at achieving "Zero Waste to Landfill". The group employs more than 12,000 people and operates in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Turkey, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United States and Poland. Saica positions itself around sustainability, circularity and innovation. Its paper business is built on recycled fibre, and its waste-management arm is designed to reduce and maximise the value of waste, returning recycled materials into the production process. The group has invested in decarbonisation, including biomass boilers at sites such as Venizel and Nogent-sur-Seine, and in energy recovery, with a plant in El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza. It has also expanded through acquisitions, including the French Emin Leydier Group in 2018 and the Thimm Group, whose acquisition was announced in 2026 and approved by the EU Commission. The company is a private Spanish company and is not listed on a stock exchange. Its corporate identity is closely tied to the Saica brand, under which its paper, packaging and environmental services are marketed to manufacturing, retail, e-commerce, logistics, local-authority and publishing customers.
History
Saica was founded in 1943 as Sociedad Anónima Industrias Celulosa Aragonesa in Zaragoza, Spain, with six workers at its paper production plant. The company began as a paper producer and, from 1975, started an integration process by acquiring cardboard packaging plants (Saica Pack) and integrated waste management operations (Saica Natur). This vertical integration linked papermaking, packaging conversion and waste recovery into a single industrial model. In 1987 Saica commissioned the first cogeneration plant in the Spanish industrial sector. International expansion accelerated in 1998 when the group opened for business in France with Saica Paper and Saica Pack. In 2000 Saica led the way in grammage reduction with the start-up of its MP9 machine, described as the world's first machine capable of producing grammages up to 75 g/m². In 2011 the group inaugurated its first Energy Recovery Plant in El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza, avoiding 450,000 tonnes of waste from the paper production process being sent to landfill. Geographic growth continued in 2012 with a new state-of-the-art Saica Paper plant in Partington, near Manchester, in the United Kingdom. In 2015 Saica began diversifying: it opened the Natur Cycle Plus plant, producing more than 9,200 tonnes of recycled pellets from recycled low-density polyethylene, and acquired flexible packaging plants (Saica Flex). In 2018 its European presence increased with the acquisition of the French Emin Leydier Group. Decarbonisation efforts started in 2019 with the inauguration of the first biomass boiler in Venizel, and in 2020 the group launched the Saica Pack Hamilton project in the United States. By the 2020s Saica Group described itself as present in eleven countries with a team of more than 10,000 client-focused professionals, and later with more than 12,000 employees. Its business areas span Saica Natur (comprehensive waste management), Saica Paper (recycled paper), Saica Pack (corrugated packaging) and Saica Flex (flexible packaging). In 2026 the group announced the acquisition of the Thimm Group, which was approved by the EU Commission, and continued to invest in decarbonisation, including a new biomass boiler at its Nogent-sur-Seine site.
