At seventeen he went to London to study English, where he discovered the elegance of suspenders and checked sweaters worn by university students. On returning to France he brought back a seamless Shetland sweater, something fairly unknown in France at the time, laying the basis for his vision of a sophisticated interpretation of the emerging preppy look. He flew to New York in the late 1960s and fell in love with traditional brands. His father owned clothing stores in the south of France.
