Overview

Daniel Maghen is a French art gallery, publishing house and auction business dedicated to original bande dessinée (Franco-Belgian comic) art and illustration. Its founder, Daniel Maghen, began trading in original comic pages in 1990 and opened the gallery on the Quais de Seine in Paris in 2003. In 2018 the gallery moved to larger premises at 36 rue du Louvre in the 1st arrondissement. The gallery holds what it describes as the largest permanent collection in Europe, with more than 20,000 comic and illustration works by over 300 artists, and stages around ten exhibitions a year. The publishing arm, Éditions Daniel Maghen, was founded in 2005 and publishes comics, illustrated biographies of comic artists, art books and exhibition catalogues. In 2019 the group added an auction house, Daniel Maghen Enchères, which runs regular sales of original art. The business remains privately owned and is a reference point for collectors, authors and graphic-art enthusiasts.

History

Daniel Maghen's involvement with comic art began in 1990, when he launched the market for original bande dessinée pages. In 2003 he opened the Galerie Daniel Maghen on the Quais de Seine in Paris, turning his passion into a gallery business. The gallery specialised in the sale of original comic pages and illustrations and built a permanent collection that grew to more than 20,000 works by over 300 artists, described as the largest in Europe. In 2005 the publishing house Éditions Daniel Maghen was founded, with collections covering comics, illustrated biographies of comic artists, art books and, later, children's books. In 2018 the gallery inaugurated a new, larger and brighter space at 36 rue du Louvre in the heart of Paris. From 2010 Daniel Maghen also acted as an expert for auction houses Tajan and Christie's, and in 2019 he founded his own auction house, Daniel Maghen Enchères, operated by Daniel Maghen Enchères Et Expertises, with its first sale in October 2019. The gallery organises around ten exhibitions a year, including retrospectives devoted to Cosey (2021), Benjamin Lacombe (2019), Alex Alice (2018), William Vance (2017), Hermann (2017) and Kim Jung Gi (2016).
