Overview

Darktrace is a British cybersecurity company founded in 2013 and headquartered in Cambridge. The company uses machine learning and behavioral analysis technology to provide network threat detection, investigation, and autonomous response solutions. Its products include the Enterprise Immune System, Antigena autonomous response technology, and threat visualization tools. Darktrace listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2021 and was acquired and taken private by Thoma Bravo for approximately $5.3 billion in 2024.

History

Darktrace was established in Cambridge in 2013 by mathematicians and cyber-defence specialists connected with Invoke Capital. The company’s early personnel included several individuals who had previously worked at Autonomy, the British software business associated with Mike Lynch. Darktrace developed an alternative to security systems based primarily on known signatures and rules: its software used machine learning to model ordinary behaviour within each customer environment and identify deviations that could signal an attack. The company’s principal research base remained in Cambridge, while a second research and development centre was established in The Hague. It also developed an international commercial presence, including offices in London, San Francisco, and Singapore. Its central product concept became the Enterprise Immune System, which applies behavioural modelling to networks, devices, users, and other digital entities. The Threat Visualizer interface presents relationships and activity across the environment, while Antigena is designed to take autonomous or semi-autonomous action against suspicious activity. Darktrace marketed the combination as a means of detecting and containing threats in real time, including previously unseen attacks, ransomware, insider activity, and attacks exploiting newly disclosed vulnerabilities. Demand for cybersecurity tools increased during the expansion of remote work and cloud adoption. Darktrace broadened its platform to cover email, cloud services, operational technology, industrial systems, and externally exposed assets. The company’s stated objective was to provide a unified view of an organisation’s changing digital environment and to reduce the delay between threat detection and defensive action. Darktrace’s public-market phase began in April 2021, when it listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker DARK. Its initial market value was reported at roughly £2.5 billion. The share price and market capitalisation later moved considerably, reflecting both investor enthusiasm for cybersecurity and scrutiny of the company’s accounting and commercial disclosures. In March 2022, Darktrace acquired Cybersprint, a Dutch attack-surface-management company, for €47.5 million. This gave Darktrace a stronger capability for identifying assets and weaknesses visible from outside a customer’s network. In January 2023, Quintessential Capital Management published a report alleging possible accounting errors and irregularities involving reseller and customer contracts, particularly in the period before Darktrace’s 2021 listing. The short seller also highlighted personnel and historical connections between Darktrace and Autonomy, which had itself faced controversy over accounting practices related to its sale to Hewlett-Packard. Darktrace rejected the allegations. The company commissioned EY to review relevant contracts and internal financial processes. In July 2023, Darktrace said EY had identified a small number of errors and inconsistencies but had not found issues material to its financial statements. The controversy remained a prominent part of the company’s corporate history and affected market confidence. In April 2024, Thoma Bravo announced an agreement to acquire Darktrace for approximately $5.3 billion. The transaction received UK court approval in September and completed on 1 October 2024. Darktrace consequently ceased to be listed and became part of Thoma Bravo’s private-equity portfolio. Around the completion of the transaction, Poppy Gustafsson left the chief executive position and Jill Popelka, previously chief operating officer, became chief executive and joined the board. Reference material records a further leadership transition in 2026, with Ed Jennings assuming the chief executive role in March. Darktrace continued expanding its product and acquisition strategy after going private. In early 2025 it announced the purchase of Cado Security, adding technology oriented toward cyberattack investigation and cloud-related response. Its brand now covers a broad enterprise cybersecurity portfolio, including network and endpoint monitoring, email and cloud security, attack-surface management, autonomous response, and cyber investigation. The company’s distinctive market proposition remains the use of behavioural machine learning and automated response to help organisations identify and contain attacks as they develop.

Products and positioning

Premium enterprise cybersecurity positioned around machine learning, behavioural anomaly detection, continuous monitoring, and autonomous response.

  • Network and enterprise detection and response

    Darktrace Enterprise Immune System

Darktrace’s foundational platform applies machine learning to the activity of networks, users, devices, and other digital assets. It develops an organisation-specific behavioural baseline and flags deviations that may represent malicious or otherwise anomalous activity. The system is intended to detect both known and unfamiliar attack patterns and to provide continuous visibility across complex enterprise environments.

  • Autonomous cyber response

    Darktrace Antigena

Antigena is Darktrace’s autonomous-response technology. When the platform identifies activity that appears threatening, Antigena can be configured to interrupt, contain, or restrict the activity while allowing legitimate operations to continue. Its purpose is to reduce the time between detection and mitigation, especially when security teams are handling many simultaneous alerts.

  • Security analytics and visualisation

    Darktrace Threat Visualizer

Threat Visualizer is the interface used to present activity and relationships across a customer’s digital environment. It helps security personnel examine anomalous behaviour, trace connections between entities, and review the context surrounding a suspected incident. The interface supports Darktrace’s emphasis on behavioural analysis rather than isolated alerts.

  • Email security

    Darktrace / EMAIL

Darktrace’s email-security offering applies behavioural analysis to communications and user activity to identify suspicious messages, account compromise, impersonation, and other email-borne threats. It is positioned as part of the broader platform rather than as a conventional static filtering product.

  • Cloud security

    Darktrace / CLOUD

Darktrace / CLOUD extends the company’s monitoring and behavioural-analysis approach to cloud services and cloud workloads. The product is intended to help identify unusual access, activity, or relationships across dynamic cloud environments where assets and user permissions can change frequently.

  • Attack-surface management · 2022

    Darktrace / ATTACK SURFACE MANAGEMENT

This offering focuses on discovering and monitoring assets that are exposed to the internet or otherwise form part of an organisation’s external attack surface. Its capabilities were strengthened by the acquisition of Cybersprint and are intended to help organisations identify unknown assets, weaknesses, and changes in external exposure.

  • Cyber investigation and response · 2025

    Cado Security technology

Following Darktrace’s announced acquisition of Cado Security, the company’s portfolio includes technology associated with investigating cyberattacks and examining activity in cloud and other modern infrastructure environments.
