Overview
The Dawnay Arms is a historic country pub and inn in North Yorkshire, England. It takes its name from the Dawnay family, whose estate shaped the village of West Heslerton for generations; for more than 150 years the village, its cottages, farmland and the pub formed part of the Dawnay Estate. The pub is situated on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough, and also lies on the A19 road in Shipton-by-Beningbrough. The building itself dates from about 1730, when it was constructed as a house before later being converted into a pub, and it was extended in the 20th century. It has been grade II listed since 1986. Today the Dawnay Arms operates as a friendly country inn serving quality food, local ales, comfortable accommodation and a warm Yorkshire welcome. It offers a great selection of draught beers, including its exclusive Dawnay Pale, alongside wines, premium spirits, soft drinks and bar snacks. Its menus feature freshly prepared lunches, hearty evening meals and popular Sunday roasts, with traditional Yorkshire favourites made from quality ingredients. The pub also provides en-suite guest rooms, a spacious patio and beer garden, and entertainment including live sports on two screens, pool and darts. It welcomes camper vans and motorhomes with fresh water, waste disposal and toilet facilities, and coaches by appointment. The Dawnay Arms is open seven days a week from noon to 11pm. It has long welcomed travellers, locals and visitors alike, continuing a tradition of hospitality that stretches back centuries. Nearby lies one of Britain's most important archaeological sites, where evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement has revealed over 1,500 years of local history. In 2025, the pub was registered as an asset of community value, at which time it hosted live music, charity events, various clubs, and annual beer and music festivals. Later that year, it cut its opening times to three days per week.
History
The Dawnay Arms is a historic pub in Shipton-by-Beningbrough, a village in North Yorkshire, England. The building was constructed in about 1730 as a house, later being converted into a pub. It was extended in the 20th century. It lies on the A19 road, and as of 2015 served a variety of food and beers. In 2025, it was registered as an asset of community value, at which time it hosted live music, charity events, various clubs, and annual beer and music festivals. However, later in the year, it cut its opening times to three days per week. The building has been grade II listed since 1986. The building is constructed of pink-red brick on a rendered plinth, with a floor band, stepped eaves, and a pantile roof with tumbled-in gables. It has two storeys, three bays and a rear wing on the left. On the front is a gabled porch, and the windows are sashes. The pub takes its name from the historic Dawnay family, whose estate shaped West Heslerton for generations. For more than 150 years, the village, its cottages, farmland and the pub formed part of the Dawnay Estate, giving the inn a unique connection to local Yorkshire history. Situated between York and Scarborough, The Dawnay Arms has long welcomed travellers, locals and visitors alike. Today it continues that tradition as a friendly country inn serving quality food, local ales, comfortable accommodation and a warm Yorkshire welcome. Just a short walk away lies one of Britain's most important archaeological sites, where evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement has revealed over 1,500 years of local history.
