Overview
Dayla Drinks is a British family-owned wholesale drinks distributor based in the Home Counties, trading as Dayla Ltd. Its roots reach back to 1851, when the predecessor business North & Randall Ltd was established as a mineral water manufacturer; the family line also includes Joseph Senior Holland, a Wendover builder, hotelier, wine and spirit merchant and licensee who brewed Holland's Ales at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in the late 1800s. The Dayla brand itself was launched in the early 1970s by Richard Cooper, who had joined the family business in 1947 and had earlier brought the South African soft drink Hubbly Bubbly to the UK. Today Dayla describes itself as an all-embracing drinks distribution operation with several specialist divisions. It supplies beers, ciders, soft drinks, wines, spirits, snacks and bar accessories — a portfolio of more than 3,000 products — alongside added-value services such as technical services, design, equipment hire, a trade counter and beer festivals. The company says it is one of the largest distributors of cask-conditioned ales in the UK and works closely with regional and local brewers. It also owns the locally renowned wine merchants James Pettit & Company and the draught soft drinks businesses Nichols and Hartridges. The Home Counties are Dayla's heartland. The company operates a fleet of 18 drays serving over 1,800 customers throughout the licensed on-trade, and employs almost 100 staff. It positions itself as 'big enough to cope but small enough to care', emphasising family values and service as its hallmark. Dayla has received recognition including the AB InBev Wholesale Excellence Awards Gold Award 2018 and Best of the Best 2018.
History
Dayla Drinks traces its origins to the late 1800s, when Joseph Senior Holland — a local builder, hotelier, wine and spirit merchant and licensee — first brewed Holland's Ales in the village of Wendover at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. He sold the brewery to his son, also named Joseph, who continued brewing until 1914, when he was called up to serve in the First World War. Having sold the brewery, upon his return he bought the small mineral water company North & Randall Ltd in 1919. North & Randall had been established in 1851, and this date is treated by the company as the founding point of the business. In 1947 Joe was joined by his son-in-law Richard Cooper, who together with his wife Pat and Joe's other daughter Joan acquired many other local soft drinks businesses over the years. In the late 1950s Richard brought over from South Africa a new soft drink called Hubbly Bubbly in eight fruit flavours; by setting up a co-operative of 30 bottlers across the UK, the drink became a runaway success. In the early 1970s he launched a new brand, Dayla, which became another triumph, extending across all types of drinks. Over the following decades the business evolved from brewing and mineral water manufacturing into wholesale drinks distribution. It acquired or developed specialist divisions, including the locally renowned wine merchants James Pettit & Company and the draught soft drinks businesses Nichols and Hartridges. Dayla grew into a leading name in the wholesale drinks world, describing itself as an all-embracing drinks distribution operation. By the 2010s the company was operating from the Home Counties with a fleet of 18 drays serving over 1,800 customers throughout the licensed on-trade, employing almost 100 staff, and offering a portfolio of more than 3,000 products across beers, ciders, soft drinks, wines, spirits, snacks and bar accessories. It also provided added-value services such as technical services, design, equipment hire, a trade counter and beer festivals. In 2018 Dayla received the AB InBev Wholesale Excellence Awards Gold Award and the Best of the Best award. The company continues to be family-owned and run, now in its fourth generation, and remains registered in England & Wales as Dayla Ltd (No. 384654).
