Overview

Dayz Town Tsukuba (デイズタウンつくば) is a mixed-use shopping center located in Takezono 1-chome, Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. It sits about a five-minute walk from Tsukuba Station on the Tsukuba Express line and is adjacent to the Tsukuba International Congress Center. The name "DAYZ" is derived from the initials of Daily, Amenity, Youth, and Zone. The facility originally opened in 1985 as the Daiei Tsukuba Gakuen store, and after Daiei closed in 2002 the property was acquired by Hirosawa Tochi Soko Co., Ltd., which redeveloped it into Dayz Town Tsukuba, opening on March 25, 2005. The center is deliberately positioned differently from the nearby Tonarie Tsukuba Square, which focuses on fashion and other retail around the Q't complex. Dayz Town Tsukuba instead concentrates on food stores and restaurants, with 33 tenants. Its sales floors occupy the basement level and the ground floor. The ground floor is largely taken up by a TSUTAYA bookstore and a Sundrug drugstore, while the basement level houses a game center, karaoke, and a dining district. The official website lists tenants including food and daily-goods stores, restaurants and cafes, a bank branch, a cleaning service, a seal shop, and entertainment venues such as GiGO and Karaoke RAINBOW. The third floor above ground hosts the office of the general incorporated association Tsukuba United Sun GAIA, which operates the volleyball V.League team Tsukuba United Sun GAIA. The site has a notable history in the Tsukuba area. When it opened as Daiei in April 1985, the same year as the International Science and Technology Exposition (Tsukuba Expo '85), the surrounding Tsukuba Science City was still largely farmland, but the area around Daiei had a comparatively urban atmosphere with a Seibu department store and two discos nearby. At one point a drive-in theater was set up on the roof. Daiei closed on May 31, 2002, and the facility was later purchased by Hirosawa Tochi Soko Co., Ltd. and reborn as Dayz Town. A Seiyu Tsukuba Takezono store opened within the center on March 28, 2012, and closed on March 31, 2023. On October 17, 2023, TSUTAYA Dayz Town Tsukuba opened. The center remains an active local shopping and dining destination in Tsukuba.

History

The site of Dayz Town Tsukuba has its origins in the Daiei Tsukuba Gakuen store, which opened on April 29, 1985, the same year that the International Science and Technology Exposition (Tsukuba Expo '85) was held. At that time, the Tsukuba Science City area was still a rural landscape of fields and farmland, but the surroundings of Daiei included a Seibu department store and two discos, giving that particular spot a comparatively urban atmosphere. At one point a drive-in theater was set up on the roof of the store. Daiei closed the store on May 31, 2002. The facility was subsequently purchased by Hirosawa Tochi Soko Co., Ltd., and redeveloped as Dayz Town. Dayz Town Tsukuba opened on March 25, 2005. The name "DAYZ" was formed from the initials of Daily, Amenity, Youth, and Zone. On March 28, 2012, a Seiyu Tsukuba Takezono store opened within the center. It operated for about eleven years and closed on March 31, 2023. On October 17, 2023, TSUTAYA Dayz Town Tsukuba opened, becoming a major tenant on the ground floor alongside the drugstore Sundrug. The center is located about a five-minute walk from Tsukuba Station on the Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company's Tsukuba Express line, adjacent to the Tsukuba International Congress Center. It is composed of 33 tenants, with sales floors on the basement and ground levels. The ground floor is largely occupied by TSUTAYA and Sundrug, while the basement contains a game center, karaoke, and a restaurant district. On the third floor above ground is the office of the general incorporated association Tsukuba United Sun GAIA, which operates the volleyball V.League team Tsukuba United Sun GAIA. The center is positioned as a food- and dining-oriented counterpart to the nearby Tonarie Tsukuba Square, which centers on the Q't complex and has many fashion and other stores.
