Overview

dbv-Verlag is an Austrian specialist publishing house focused on tax and business law. Founded in 1977 by DI Gerhard Erker as a scientific publisher, it initially published academic works from the university environment in Graz, including dissertations, research reports, and conference proceedings. Over time, the company shifted its focus to practical tax and business law publications, becoming a well-known provider of professional literature for tax advisors, accountants, and businesses in Austria. The publisher's catalogue includes books, loose-leaf works, journals, and online services. Notable products include the annual "Klientenmagazin" (client magazine), the "Klienten-/Steuerberaterinformation" workbook, and various practical guides on topics such as flat-rate taxation, one-stop-shop VAT procedures, and municipal tax law. dbv-Verlag also offers online services that can be integrated into clients' websites, such as tax tips and client newsletters. In 2018, the company received the Styrian coat of arms from the provincial government in recognition of its 40th anniversary and its contributions to the region. The publisher remains privately held and continues to operate from Graz, serving the Austrian market and beyond.

History

dbv-Verlag was founded in 1977 by DI Gerhard Erker as a scientific publisher. Initially, its activities focused on publications from the environment of the two universities in Graz, such as dissertations, research reports, and conference proceedings. Notable authors like Arno C. Hofer and Folke Tegetthoff made their first steps with dbv-Verlag. Among its over 800 publications are works for the ASSA (today ASA - Aeronautics and Space Agency), the land use plan of the city of Graz (STEK Stadt-Entwicklungskonzept Graz under city councillor Erich Edegger), the Austrian Hit Lexicon, and philatelic reference works. In addition to publishing, the company started a school book trade, later followed by a computer centre as a distribution partner of Texas Instruments and a seminar centre. Anniversary volumes for companies (e.g., Anton Paar and Roche) as part of public relations complement the publishing programme, as do travel literature and energy topics (biomass, energy transition by biomass pioneer Ao. Univ.-Prof. Univ.-Doz. DI Dr. August Raggam). Printed works specifically for tax advisors to pass on to clients, including custom cover branding, were not only an invention of the visionary founder DI Gerhard Erker but have become a fixed component in the marketing mix of numerous firms. The annual workbook "Klienten-/Steuerberaterinformation" also created a standard in the industry 35 years ago (often copied today), arising from the need for annually updated specialist information. On the occasion of the company's 40th anniversary, the Styrian provincial government honoured dbv-Verlag with the award of the provincial coat of arms, presented by Governor Schützenhöfer on 15 January 2018. Today, dbv-Verlag continues to operate as a specialist publisher for tax and business law, offering a range of books, loose-leaf works, journals, and online services for tax advisors, accountants, and businesses.
