History

The DeLUXE Theater opened in April 1941 as the premiere Black movie theater at 3303 Lyons Avenue in Houston's 5th Ward. After the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, segregated movie theaters ended and the DeLUXE closed in 1969. The theater sat empty until 2015. In 1998, the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation purchased the DeLUXE theater and the adjacent furniture store and began a master plan to reutilize it as a community performing and visual arts facility. The FWCRC engaged in a tri-party agreement with The City of Houston and Texas Southern University, leading to the rehabilitation of the venue. In 2014, an official groundbreaking ceremony was held and renovation began.
