Overview
De Mäkelbörger Backwaren GmbH was a German bakery manufacturer and retail group headquartered in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Founded in 1969 and privatized in 1991, the company grew into a regional bakery group with production sites in Neubrandenburg and Wustermark, supplying own outlets, franchise branches, discounters and other customers. It began producing frozen bread, rolls and confectionery products in 1997. In 2003 it took over the Greifswald bakery Schulz, adding a production site and ten branches. A year later it founded the subsidiary 'Der Havelbäcker' in Wustermark near Berlin as a third production site. In 2008 a fourth production line was added with the organic bakery Gut Falkenhof. In June 2011 the wholly owned subsidiary pro-hav GmbH was founded, and with the takeover of the Handwerksbäckerei on Prenzlauer Promenade the branch network expanded by 85 franchise outlets in the greater Berlin area. As of 31 January 2014 the group operated two production facilities and supplied 130 own and 60 franchise branches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Berlin and Brandenburg. It also ran the 'Kornhus' restaurant locations in Neustrelitz, Neubrandenburg and Stralsund. On 1 July 2014 the protective shield proceedings were lifted and formal insolvency proceedings opened; the last branch closed on 24 December 2014. The company was taken over by Lila Bäcker of Pasewalk, creating a bakery group with around 150 million euros in revenue, more than 3,000 employees and 500 branches in northeastern Germany.
