Overview

De Parelduiker is a Dutch literary-historical journal that has appeared five times a year since 1996. Its title is taken from a motto by Multatuli: 'Een parelduiker vreest den modder niet' ('A pearl diver does not fear the mud'). The journal reports, in an accessible, non-academic manner, on quests for the hidden treasures of literary history. Under that Multatuli-derived idea, it not only illuminates the hidden side of well-known authors but also brings forgotten writers back to the surface. The journal is more or less a successor to the periodical Het oog in 't zeil and is published by a foundation of the same name. It focuses primarily on literary-historical subjects rather than literary-critical or theoretical ones. It regularly issues specials or even double issues devoted to a single author; in the past this has been done for Jeroen Brouwers, Louis Couperus, Johan Polak, J.J. Slauerhoff and Gerrit Komrij. De Parelduiker was initially published by Uitgeverij Bas Lubberhuizen. It then came under the management of Uitgeverij Vantilt. From 2021 it has fallen under Uitgeverij Van Oorschot. The journal maintains an active events programme: the annual Parelduikermiddag is held during the Boekenweek. On Saturday 14 March 2026 the annual Parelduikermiddag was celebrated with the appearance of the 150th issue and a literary programme featuring Lodewijk Verduin speaking about Nanne Tepper, Iris Pronk in conversation with Fleur Speet about Renate Dorrestein, and Christina Flick reading from her debut collection Oceandiva. On 15 March 2025 the Parelduikermiddag was devoted to Maria Dermoût's 1955 novel 'De tienduizend dingen', with Dido Michielsen, Maurice Seleky, Ellen Deckwitz and Yra van Dijk. On 16 March 2024 guests included Mark Schaevers on the biography of Hugo Claus, Julien Ignacio on growing up in a migrant family and his authorship, and poet Sasja Janssen with a reading from her latest collection. The current issue features contributions including 'Vijf ontmoetingen' by Willem van Toorn (introduced by K. Michel), Marika Keblusek on the anxious heroic life of Dinah Nelken, Kees Snoek on Elisabeth de Roos and Emily Hahn: two modern women in the interbellum, Hein Aalders on the late friendship between F.C. Terborgh and A. Roland Holst, and Reinder Storm remembering Nop Maas (1949-2026). The cover shows Dinah Nelken, 1930, photographed by Lotte Jacobi (Ullstein Bild, Berlin). Readers can subscribe or become a 'Vriend van De Parelduiker'.
