Overview

De Roode Eenhoorn is a historic building and former café located at Dorpsstraat 173 in Nieuwe Niedorp, in the municipality of Hollands Kroon, Netherlands. Its origins trace back to at least 1530, when it was first mentioned as a resting place for man and horse. Over the centuries, the establishment operated under various names, including 'Het Wapen van Hoorn' and 'De Eenhoorn', before adopting its current name 'De Roode Eenhoorn' in 1795. The café served the local community for centuries until it ceased operations as a hospitality venue. Between 2011 and 2012, the building was renovated and converted into a residential care home with eight care studios for people with physical or mild intellectual disabilities. The care component is managed by Stichting ZorgSaam. On 29 June 2021, the front house was registered as a municipal monument in Hollands Kroon. Today, De Roode Eenhoorn stands as a heritage landmark, reflecting the region's social and architectural history.

History

The history of De Roode Eenhoorn begins in 1530, when it was first documented as a 'resting place for man and horse'. By 1599, Aerien Mannes was mentioned as 'waerdt int Wapen van Hoorn' (innkeeper at the Arms of Hoorn), and he operated the inn during the first quarter of the 17th century. His widow remarried the subsequent innkeeper, Cornelis Albertsz. Snel. A deed from 13 January 1619, drawn up by notary J.C. van der Geest, indicates that the café originally bore the name 'Het Wapen van Hoorn'. The gravestone of Cornelis Albertsz. Snel, displayed at the adjacent church tower, depicts the inn sign, the name 'Den Eenhoorn', and the coat of arms of Hoorn. A protocol from notary L. van der Beets dated 27 July 1718 refers to the inn as 'De Eenhoorn'. On 20 March 1795, the current name 'De Roode Eenhoorn' is first mentioned. After the appointment of citizens Cornelis Wonder and Dirk van der Stok as aldermen, a meal was enjoyed in the village café by the village council and committee. The expense note states: 'The council and committee then proceeded to innkeeper Jan de Groot of the café 'De Roode Eenhoorn' to partake of the meal there.' In 2010, on the initiative of the 'Idee.Lot' project, a plan to restore De Roode Eenhoorn and build care apartments was presented in the village hall of Nieuwe Niedorp. In December 2011, the renovation of the café and the construction of eight care studios began. A year later, in December 2012, the project was completed. The care section of De Roode Eenhoorn is managed by Stichting ZorgSaam. On 29 June 2021, the front house was registered as a municipal monument in Hollands Kroon.
