Overview
Deepblue Technology (深兰科技) is a Chinese artificial intelligence company headquartered in Shanghai. It describes itself as a fast-growing AI leader whose business spans intelligent driving, intelligent robotics, intelligent industry and intelligent healthcare. The group operates through entities including 深兰股份, 深兰控股 and 深兰科创, and in 2023 its main operating entity became 深兰人工智能科技(上海)股份有限公司, marking a shift toward scaled development. The company has been recognized by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a specialized and sophisticated 'little giant' enterprise (专精特新“小巨人”). Deepblue positions itself around proprietary core technologies in computer vision, biological intelligence, autonomous driving and cognitive intelligence. It states that it has won more than 50 championships in leading world computer science and AI competitions, and it has established academic collaborations and joint laboratories with universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Central South University, alongside its own Deepblue Academy of Sciences. Its applied product portfolio includes the Panda autonomous bus, the Panda intelligent dining car, the Panda road sweeper, indoor cleaning and UV disinfection robots, industrial inspection equipment, AI large models and digital-human SaaS platforms. Commercially, Deepblue is best known for its 'Panda' family of autonomous vehicles. It says its forward-designed Panda bus is the only commercial vehicle holding autonomous driving test and commercial licenses in five Chinese cities — Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Changsha and Wuhan — and that it was among the first globally to obtain autonomous commercial licenses. The company has also pursued overseas projects, including a smart-city contract in Uzbekistan, and has been listed among global unicorn enterprises. Deepblue has attracted investment from a range of Chinese funds and corporates, including Yunfeng Capital, DNA Fund, Lanhai Fund, China International Capital Corporation (CICC) and Greenland Holdings, and in recent years Pudong Venture Capital participated in a pre-IPO round. The company also emphasizes social responsibility, including AI epidemic-control tools during COVID-19 and support for the 'Tree Hole Rescue' AI suicide-prevention initiative.
History
Deepblue Technology was founded by a team of overseas-educated PhDs who returned to China to pursue basic research and application development in artificial intelligence. In its early years the company focused on computer vision, biometrics and retail technology. It launched the quiXmart intelligent system for traditional retail upgrades and smart city/community management, and in June of that period opened an unattended smart store using facial recognition, biometric identification and biometric payment — a project covered by China Business Network and the BBC. It also released the Facepay facial/biometric payment system and, with Ant Financial, the takego 'grab and go' checkout-free payment system. The company attracted early investment from DNA Fund and Lanhai Fund (angel round), followed by Yunfeng Capital (Pre-A round) and later Huaying Capital and Deshang Capital (A round). It formed strategic partnerships, including with Hong Kong's PCCW and with China Unicom Shanghai to build a 5G joint laboratory. In 2018 it established the Central South University–Deepblue Technology AI Joint Research Institute, with eight academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering appointed to its expert committee. Deepblue moved aggressively into autonomous driving. It released China's first intelligent mobile retail commercial vehicle with autonomous driving functions, and from 2018 rolled out a family of 'Panda' vehicles: the Panda mobile retail vehicle, the Panda autonomous bus, the Panda logistics vehicle, the Panda intelligent dining car and the autonomous Panda sanitation vehicle. In September 2019, at the inauguration of the national intelligent connected vehicle (Wuhan) test demonstration zone, Deepblue obtained what it describes as the world's first autonomous driving commercial license. Its Panda bus became the first passenger vehicle to pass V2X connected testing and obtained a Shanghai intelligent connected vehicle road test license. The company also built a strong record in AI competitions, winning championships at NeurIPS 2019 (D-City & BDD100K object detection and AutoDL/AutoNLP challenges), ICCV 2019, ACM MM 2019, KDD Cup 2019 AutoML Track, SIGIR and IEEE ISI 2019, among others. It reports more than 50 world championships in total. Deepblue expanded its corporate structure and partnerships. It formed Greenland Deepblue Building Technology and Greenland Deepblue Intelligent Robot Technology with Greenland Holdings, established Deepblue Robot (Changzhou) with the Tianning district government, and signed agreements with Wuhan's Jianghan district government and Oceanwide Holdings covering a Central China regional headquarters and China's first CBD autonomous commercial operation. In 2023 its main operating entity changed to Deepblue Artificial Intelligence Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., as it entered a phase of scaled development. In 2025 it opened a new headquarters in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, and was selected as a 2025 Global Unicorn Enterprise. It has continued to sign major agreements, including a four-party strategic cooperation with three China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) subsidiaries in 2025 and a smart-city project in Uzbekistan. Throughout its history Deepblue has emphasized social responsibility. During the COVID-19 pandemic it developed the 'Owl' AI temperature-screening system capable of multi-person measurement at 15 meters, a gene-sequence comparison platform that cut whole-virus comparison time from about 30 minutes to 3 minutes, a portable AI nucleic acid rapid-testing machine, and the 'Lansha' mobile laboratory that performed over 10 million nucleic acid tests during the 2022 Shanghai lockdown. It also supports the 'Tree Hole Rescue' AI suicide-prevention project founded by its chief scientist Huang Zhisheng.
