Overview
Delica AG is a Swiss food manufacturer headquartered in Buchs in the canton of Aargau, and a company of the Migros Group. It was founded on 1 June 2021 as a merger of five businesses: Chocolat Frey AG, the original Delica AG, Midor AG, Riseria SA and Total Capsule Solutions SA. Under the Delica name, these units were combined into a single competence centre for indulgence products within Migros Industrie. The company develops and produces high-quality products in the areas of chocolate, snacks, cooking products and coffee, and supplies customers in Switzerland and around the world. Delica's product range is broad and includes chocolate (Chocolat Frey: bars, pralines, chocolate bars, dragées, foam kisses, seasonal items), coffee (Café Royal, Delizio, CoffeeB, Cremesso, Schwiizer Schüümli, bean and ground coffee), biscuits (Petit Beurre, Créa d'Or, Tradition), ice cream (Megastar, Coco ice-Land, Seehund-Family), cereal snacks (Farmer, Blévita), chewing gum, dried fruit and nuts, aperitif pastries, zwieback, baking mixes and dessert powders, rice, kernels and seeds, pulses, and dried mushrooms. Many of these are well-known Swiss own brands and cult products. As a specialist in needs-oriented concepts, Delica produces numerous own brands for Migros and for well-known large corporations at home and abroad. In addition to its main customer Migros, Delica supplies other retailers in Switzerland and abroad as well as wholesalers, the catering sector and industrial companies. It is also active in the private-label business, manufacturing products that are then sold by buyers under other brand names. Delica operates from five locations in Switzerland and numerous branches abroad, employing around 1,900 people (around 1,940 in 2023). The company positions itself around the claim "Reinventing Goodness", emphasizing innovation, sustainability, fair trade, organic cultivation and traceability, as well as its Swiss origins and proximity to Migros. In 2022 Migros announced its largest product innovation in company history: the CoffeeB portioned coffee machine, which works not with conventional capsules but with "unpackaged" coffee balls coated with an alginate covering. The system was launched in Switzerland and France, with Keurig Dr Pepper holding licence rights for the United States, Canada and Mexico. In 2024 Delica won a Swiss airline tender to supply chocolate for three years, an order first awarded to Chocolat Frey AG in 2015.
History
Delica AG was founded on 1 June 2021 as a merger of five companies: Chocolat Frey AG, the original Delica AG, Midor AG, Riseria SA and Total Capsule Solutions SA. The roots of these businesses reach back much further. In 1928 Migros took over the company "Alkoholfreie Weine AG", which was renamed "Produktion AG Meilen" in 1929 and later became Midor AG. In 2007, Migros Betriebe Birsfelden (MBB) became the original Delica AG. In 2009 the original Delica AG merged with Chocolat Frey AG. Total Capsule Solutions was founded in 2015 in Stabio in the canton of Ticino, where coffee products with a focus on private-label coffee capsules were produced. The new Delica AG, created in 2021, brought these units together under the roof of Migros Industrie as a single competence centre for indulgence products. It develops and produces high-quality products in the areas of chocolate, snacks, cooking products and coffee, and supplies customers in Switzerland and around the world. The company operates from five locations in Switzerland and numerous branches abroad, employing around 1,900 people (around 1,940 in 2023). On 6 September 2022, Migros announced the largest product innovation in its company history: the CoffeeB portioned coffee machine, which works not with conventional capsules but with "unpackaged" coffee balls coated with an alginate covering. The system was launched in Switzerland and France at the same time; in France Migros cooperated with Carrefour and Auchan. In the United States, Keurig Dr Pepper was to design and market its own product through a licence agreement with Delica, and it also secured licence rights for Canada and Mexico. Both the quality of the machines and that of the coffee were heavily criticized. In autumn 2023, Sweetworks was closed. The US company had been acquired by Chocolat Frey AG in 2014 but increasingly wrote losses. After the dismissal of CEO Raphael Gugerli, management was temporarily transferred to Thomas Gubler as of 1 April 2024. Moritz Werner will take over the leadership on 1 January 2027. In 2025, Migros cut almost three quarters of the workforce at Delica in Germany, from 98 employees at the end of 2024 to 26. In 2024 Delica won a tender from Swiss airline to supply chocolate for the coming three years. This major order had first been awarded to Chocolat Frey AG in 2015. Delica also produces numerous own brands for Migros and for well-known large corporations at home and abroad, and is active in the private-label business, manufacturing products that are then sold by buyers under other brand names.
