Overview
Delphi Filmpalast is a cinema located at Kantstr. 12a, 10623 Berlin, in the Charlottenburg district. It is operated as part of Yorck Kinos Berlin. The venue describes itself as Germany's largest repertory cinema auditorium, with more than 670 seats and 4K laser projection. The building, designed by architect Bernhard Sehring in the late 1920s, originally opened in 1928 as a dance hall. After being almost completely destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1949 by Walter Jonigkeit as a modern film theater with 1,200 seats and a large screen. Over the decades, the Delphi Filmpalast has been one of Berlin's most important premiere cinemas and a Berlinale venue. The basement houses the jazz club Quasimodo.
History
The building housing the Delphi Filmpalast was designed by Bernhard Sehring, the renowned architect of the neighboring Theater des Westens, in the late 1920s, originally as a dance hall. It quickly became known for its wild nights shortly after opening in 1928, and was included in the 1931 guide 'Führer durch das lasterhafte Berlin'. During World War II, the building was almost completely destroyed. After the war, Walter Jonigkeit, one of the great figures of Berlin cinema history, took over the heavily damaged building and rebuilt it in 1949 as a highly modern film theater with 1,200 seats and a mega screen. Over the decades, the Delphi Filmpalast has been one of the city's most important premiere cinemas and Berlinale venues. Together with the Bikini-Haus, Galerie C/O, and Helmut Newton Museum, the cinema forms the cultural center of West Berlin. In the basement, international jazz greats perform at the 'Quasimodo'.
