Overview

Depresivní děti touží po penězích (DDTPP) is a Czech independent theatre company founded in 2004 by director Jakub Čermák. The name translates to "Depressed Children Long for Money." The company is based in Prague and operates as an artistic collective, staging site-specific and immersive theatre in unconventional spaces such as the Venuše ve Švehlovce venue, Gabriel Loci, and the Švehlova kolej. DDTPP has gained recognition for its interdisciplinary projects that combine theatre, literature, video, film, and visual art. The company has been nominated for the Divadelní noviny Award three times (2018, 2019, 2021) and won second place in 2019. Its repertoire includes adaptations of classics (Chekhov's The Seagull, Wedekind's Lulu, etc.) and original works, often addressing contemporary social themes. The artistic director is Jakub Čermák, and the ensemble includes actors such as Zuzana Bydžovská, Vanda Hybnerová, and Daniel Krejčík. DDTPP continues to produce new performances, with recent premieres like "Očistec si zaslouží každý" (2022) and "Playroom: Sexy Storytelling" (2024).

History

Depresivní děti touží po penězích was founded in 2004 by Jakub Čermák as an artistic association (občanské sdružení). The company's early productions were staged in unusual locations, such as the flood-damaged Karlín Musical Theatre for their debut "Racek v Karlíně" (The Seagull in Karlín). In the following years, DDTPP gained a reputation for site-specific performances in non-theatrical spaces, including the Main Railway Station in Prague ("Noci na nádraží", 2007), the Vítkov Memorial ("Noci v mauzoleu", 2006; "Bernhard Monument", 2010), and various apartment buildings ("Noci v bytě", 2008). The company also created interdisciplinary projects like "Reliquiarum" (2009), a social-theatrical happening inspired by the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Karlštejn Castle. In 2011, DDTPP participated in the Prague Quadrennial and created "MY FATHER'S SECRET," an international project about the invisibility of the gay community in former socialist countries. The company has been nominated for the Divadelní noviny Award three times (2018, 2019, 2021) and won second place in 2019. In 2022, they premiered "Očistec si zaslouží každý" (Purgatory Deserves Everyone), a grotesque play about the deformation of a politician's personality, starring Zuzana Bydžovská and Vanda Hybnerová. In 2024, they premiered "Playroom: Sexy Storytelling," a continuous workshop and performance project focusing on intimacy and sexuality in performing arts. DDTPP continues to perform at their home venue Venuše ve Švehlovce in Prague and on tours.
