Overview
Desprat vins (formerly Desprat et Saint Verny) is a French company specialising in the distribution of wines and spirits, particularly the wines of the Côtes-d'Auvergne. Founded in 1885 and based in Aurillac in the Cantal department, it grew out of a family of farmers from Lalo de Yolet who settled in Aurillac in the 19th century and moved from innkeeping into the wine trade. The business was created by Soubrier, whose son-in-law Félix Desprat took over and gave the enterprise its family name. Over the 20th century the company passed through successive generations — Jean Desprat from 1937 to 1968, then Michel and Jacques Desprat, who renamed it Desprat Frères in 1968 and built a new cellar on the chemin de Patay. In 1984 Pierre Desprat took the helm and the firm became Desprat vins. It expanded its commercial reach, becoming a supplier to cafés and restaurants from the 1995 Salon international de l'agriculture, opening a store in Aubière near Clermont-Ferrand in 2007, and investing in the independent Auvergne distillery Louis Couderc in 2005. In October 2017 Desprat Vins merged with the Saint-Verny cellar of Veyre-Monton, owned by the Limagrain cooperative group, to form Desprat Saint-Verny vignoble, held equally by Limagrain and Pierre Desprat. The company remains a key player in the Auvergne wine trade, combining the region's leading marketer with its principal producer.
History
The Desprat family, farmers originally from Lalo de Yolet, settled in Aurillac in the 19th century. Initially innkeepers, they moved into the wine trade. In 1885, Soubrier created a wine business. Félix Desprat, son of the innkeeper Jean Desprat, married Soubrier's daughter and joined the business, which became 'Soubrier et gendres'. After his father-in-law's death, Félix Desprat took over. In 1937, after a barrel-making apprenticeship in the Hérault, Jean Desprat, son of Félix, took charge following his father's death. He led the company until 1968, when he handed it to his two sons, Michel and Jacques. Michel had worked in the family business since the age of 16, employed in 1952, and from 1968 he ran the company with his brother Jacques, who was responsible for delivering products to customers. In 1965 Jacques completed an oenology course in Béziers. In 1968 the company became Desprat Frères and moved into a newly built cellar on the chemin de Patay. In 1970 Michel was elected president of the Fédération Départementale du Commerce en Gros des Vins Cidres Spiritueux et Liqueurs (CNVS). In 1984, Pierre Desprat took over Desprat Frères, which became Desprat vins. Pierre had begun his career at Éditions Bordas and then at Pipière distribution. In 1987 the company moved closer to the Cave des Coteaux d'Auvergne. Since the 1995 Salon international de l'agriculture, the company has been a supplier to cafés and restaurants. At some point, 15% of turnover was generated in Paris. In 2005, Maison Desprat Vins invested in an independent Auvergne distillery, the Distillerie Louis Couderc, a liqueur maker since 1908. In 2007, the company opened a store in Aubière in the Clermont-Ferrand conurbation. In October 2017, Desprat Vins merged with the Cave Saint-Verny of Veyre-Monton, owned by the Limagrain cooperative group. The new company, named Desprat Saint-Verny vignoble, is held in equal shares by Limagrain and Pierre Desprat. It associates 'the leading marketer of Auvergne wines, Desprat, and the principal producer of Puy-de-Dôme, Saint-Verny'.
