Overview

The Deutsch-Polnische Juristen-Vereinigung e.V. (DPJV), known in English as the German-Polish Lawyers' Association and in Polish as Niemiecko-Polskie Stowarzyszenie Prawników, is a bilateral professional association of German and Polish jurists. It was founded in 1990 and is based in Berlin. The association describes itself as a forum for contacts between and with Polish and German jurists and as a body dedicated to the professional education of lawyers in both countries. Its membership brings together lawyers, judges, academics and students from Germany and Poland. The DPJV's core purpose is to convey knowledge of Polish, German and European law and to foster professional and personal exchange between jurists on both sides of the German-Polish border. To that end it organizes specialist conferences and lecture series on business and civil law, arranges study and work stays, and runs internship and job exchanges for young jurists. Host institutions for its interns and Referendare include law firms as well as companies, banks and public authorities. The association also maintains a specialists' register (Spezialistenkartei) of experts with knowledge of German and Polish law, and it brokers contacts and expert opinions. A central element of the DPJV's work is its publishing activity. It issues the Deutsch-Polnische Juristen-Zeitschrift (DPJZ), described as the first and only journal devoted to the focal issues of German-Polish legal relations and published in both German and Polish. The association has also initiated long-term German-Polish legal projects, including schools of German law at Polish universities and schools of Polish law at German universities, as well as the freely accessible central German-Polish legal database de-iure-pl with an associated legal dictionary. It cooperates with universities, institutes and other partners. The association is governed by a five-member board (Vorstand) and supported by a Kuratorium of prominent figures from German and Polish legal and public life. Its activities are aimed at practitioners, academics and students, and its events and publications serve as a bridge between the two legal systems and legal cultures.

History

The Deutsch-Polnische Juristen-Vereinigung e.V. (DPJV) was founded in 1990 with its seat in Berlin, in the period of political change that followed the end of the Cold War and the reorientation of German-Polish relations. It was established as a bilateral jurists' association, bringing together lawyers, judges, academics and students from Germany and Poland. From its beginnings the association pursued the goal of conveying knowledge of Polish, German and European law and of providing a forum where German and Polish jurists could meet, exchange experience and build professional and personal contacts. Over the years it developed a recurring programme of German-Polish specialist conferences and built up practical exchange instruments, including a German-Polish internship exchange with training opportunities for young lawyers and Referendare, a job exchange and a specialists' register. Since its founding the association has initiated several long-term German-Polish legal projects. Among these are the establishment of schools of German law at Polish universities and schools of Polish law at German universities, as well as the creation of the central German-Polish legal database de-iure-pl, which includes a legal dictionary and is freely accessible. A further milestone in the association's history was its assumption of the role of publisher of the Deutsch-Polnische Juristen-Zeitschrift (DPJZ). The journal, which the DPJV has published for several years, is described as the first and only journal devoted to the focal areas of German-Polish legal relations and appears in both German and Polish. The DPJV is led by a five-member board (Vorstand) and supported by a Kuratorium whose members have included prominent figures from German and Polish legal and public life, such as Jutta Limbach, Andrzej Zoll, Mirosław Wyrzykowski, Hanna Suchocka, Herta Däubler-Gmelin, Marcus Lutter and Ryszard Kalisz. The association continues to organize conferences, lecture series, internships and publications, and to cooperate with universities, institutes and other partners.
