Overview
DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Mainz, Germany, is the country's first and therefore oldest real-estate leasing company. Founded on 19 February 1962 under the name "Leasing Gesellschaft für Vermietungsprojekte" with share capital of DM 20,000, it is today a group company of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe and a subsidiary of the Deutsche Leasing Gruppe. The company structures and arranges project and leasing finance for large-volume, asset-based investment projects, working with corporates, savings banks and other financing partners. DAL's asset expertise spans commercial real estate and large-scale properties, transport assets such as hybrid locomotives, trams, ships and business jets, renewable-energy installations including wind farms and photovoltaic plants, and infrastructure such as fibre-optic, gas and electricity networks as well as IT project solutions. Its four business areas are Großgeschäft Firmenkunden (large-ticket corporate business), Immobilien-Management (real-estate management), Transport & Logistik (transport and logistics) and Infrastruktur & Versorgung (infrastructure and utilities). Within the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, DAL acts as a central cooperation partner for the savings banks, bundling the financial strength of roughly 350 Sparkassen and Landesbanken in Germany. According to 2026 figures cited by the company, DAL accompanies projects with a transaction volume of more than EUR 3.3 billion per year. It is a member of the Bundesverband Deutscher Leasing-Unternehmen (German Leasing Association). The company has been based in Mainz since 2014 and moved into its new corporate headquarters in Mainz-Hechtsheim on 1 March 2017. Its legal form is a GmbH & Co. KG, and it operates under the DAL brand that has existed since 1962.
History
DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH & Co. KG was founded on 19 February 1962 under the name "Leasing Gesellschaft für Vermietungsprojekte" with share capital of DM 20,000. The founding shareholders were Eberhard Kühl and Adalbert Fanto. In the following year the company concluded Germany's first real-estate leasing contract, with Zeppelin Metallwerke GmbH in Friedrichshafen; first foreign financings followed in 1964. From 1965 Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz took a stake in DAL. In 1966 DAL became the first leasing company in Germany to build up technical services such as project management, and its portfolio of leased properties reached the DM 100 million mark. In 1967 Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen and Bayerische Gemeindebank (later Bayerische Landesbank) joined as shareholders, followed by further banks. The first DAL real-estate fund was launched in 1969, the same year the company concluded its first municipal leasing contract. By 1973 the portfolio of leased properties reached DM 1 billion and share capital was increased to DM 30 million. In 1981 DAL founded Multinational-Leasing GmbH and began worldwide leasing; capital was raised to DM 60 million and the managed portfolio reached DM 10 billion, with more than 800 employees. In 1983 structural weaknesses emerged, especially in expansion strategies and internal competition. During the restructuring phase from 1984 to 1987 the shareholder banks were decisive in enabling the successful turnaround of Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH under managing director Herbert Fischer (born 1939). In 1989 DAL again acquired new business of almost DM 300 million. In 1999 Bayerische Landesbank exited as a shareholder. DAL became active in the new federal states in 1990, and from 1992 intensified cooperation with the corporate-customer advisers of the Sparkassen. Separately, AGV Anlagen- und Grundstücksvermietungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG was founded at the end of 1985 by Dieter Maier in Wiesbaden. Its first AGV leasing contract was concluded in January 1986. In 1993 AGV reached its first billion in cumulative order intake. Besides real-estate leasing, AGV was also active in broadband cabling and the leasing of decoders. In 1994 AGV founded AGV International Leasing GmbH, opening itself to international transactions. On 1 January 2005 AGV acquired 94% of the shares in Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH (DAL); the remaining 6% stayed with WestLB. In the same year Deutsche Leasing AG took over 60% of AGV from HSH Nordbank, the previous main shareholder, making Deutsche Leasing the new majority shareholder; the remaining 40% stayed with HSH Nordbank AG. In 2006 the former AGV group and Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing were organisationally merged: the company was renamed DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH & Co. KG, thus using the DAL brand that had existed since 1962. In 2009 HSH Nordbank announced it would withdraw from the refinancing of leasing business and sell its stake in DAL. HSH's shares were taken over by Deutsche Leasing on 30 September 2011, making it the sole shareholder of DAL. Since then DAL has been a subsidiary of Deutsche Sparkassen-Leasing AG & Co. KG and part of the Deutsche Leasing Gruppe, acting as a central cooperation partner of the Sparkassen for corporate real estate, renewable-energy investments and large-mobility leasing. During 2014 DAL moved all of its Wiesbaden-based companies to Mainz, which has since been the company's headquarters. On 1 March 2017 DAL moved into its new corporate headquarters in Mainz-Hechtsheim. Also in 2017 DAL took over the IT and healthcare business of Deutsche Leasing. In 2020 DAL moved into the new DAL Asset Service Center (ASC) in Fernwald, where employees for IT and medical technology work. On 1 October 2023 the IT individual and healthcare business returned to the parent company Deutsche Leasing.
