Overview

The Deutsche Geodätische Kommission (DGK) represents geodetic research and university teaching in Germany. Its tasks include scientific research in all areas of geodesy, coordination of geodetic research in Germany, scientific advice and support for university and non-university institutions, representation of geodesy at national and international level, and coordination of academic teaching at universities with geodetic education. The DGK was founded as the Deutsche Geodätische Kommission in 1952 in Munich. After reorganization within the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the DGK was transferred into the "Ausschuss Geodäsie der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften". A "Beirat Geodäsie" was added, composed of internationally renowned experts in geodesy. The DGK has up to 45 full members as well as retired members (usually professors at German universities). Corresponding members ensure close links with the international scientific geodetic community in neighbouring countries. Permanent guests provide the connection to administration, professional and specialist associations and research institutions. The DGK includes four scientific departments: "Erdmessung", "Geoinformatik", and others.

History

The DGK was founded as the Deutsche Geodätische Kommission in 1952 in Munich. In spring 1949, representatives of scientific geodesy and surveying met in Munich to resolve the founding of the Deutsche Geodätische Kommission; the initiative was led by Martin Näbauer, holder of the chair for geodesy at the Technische Hochschule München (now Technische Universität – TUM) and full member of the BAdW. After reorganization within the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the DGK was transferred into the "Ausschuss Geodäsie der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften". A "Beirat Geodäsie" was added, composed of internationally renowned experts in geodesy.
