Overview

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschlechtserziehung (DGG) is a German professional association dedicated to scientifically grounded sex education, particularly the legally mandated cross-curricular sexual education in all schools and all grade levels. Founded on 1 February 1978 in Bonn, it was registered as a non-profit association (e.V.) until the end of 2021. Since 2022 it continues its work as a non-registered association (neV) under the leadership of its last president, Linus Dietz, operating a research and advisory office with an archive, library, and media collection in Würzburg. The DGG sees its mission less as "Geschlechtserziehung" (sex education in a narrow sense) and more as health education in the sense of the World Health Organization, incorporating sexual well-being. It is affiliated with the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS). The association publishes the journal DGG-Informationen zur Sexualpädagogik und Sexualerziehung (ISSN 0935-2643, later ISSN 1865-4703). At its peak it had around 300 members and was one of the largest professional associations for school sex education in Germany.

History

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschlechtserziehung (DGG) was founded on 1 February 1978 in Bonn as a registered non-profit association (e.V.). Its founding chairman was Rudi Maskus from Gießen. The association was created to provide teachers in German schools with scientifically grounded sex education, responding to the legal requirement for cross-curricular sexual education introduced in 1968. Over the decades, the DGG became one of the largest professional associations for school sex education in Germany, with around 300 members at its peak. Honorary chairmen included Norbert Kluge (from 1985) and Karla Etschenberg (from 1994). Since 2001, Linus J. Dietz from Würzburg led the society. The DGG published the journal DGG-Informationen zur Sexualpädagogik und Sexualerziehung (ISSN 0935-2643, later ISSN 1865-4703) since 1978. At the end of 2021, the registered association was dissolved. From 2022, its tasks and goals continue under a non-registered association (neV) led by Linus Dietz, operating a research and advisory office with archive, library, and media collection in Würzburg. The DGG remains affiliated with the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS).
