Overview

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin (DGLRM e.V.) — the German Society for Aerospace Medicine — is a scientific society founded in 1961 as a registered voluntary association (eingetragener Verein). It is dedicated to research and exchange on aviation and space medicine questions, with a particular emphasis on safety in aviation and spaceflight. From its inception the society has been independent, free of external interests, and financed exclusively through membership dues. The DGLRM is a professional association of people interested in flight medicine. Roughly 90% of its members are physicians who run flight-medical examination centres or work in flight medicine or flight physiology in scientific contexts, in space medicine, aviation medicine, travel medicine, or as military flight surgeons. The civil–military composition of the society is roughly balanced, with around 430 members. Its stated goals are pursued through members' research activities, internal information exchange via regular scientific conferences and continuing-education events, and the publication of scientific communications in the field of aerospace medicine. Working groups address specific topics such as the history of aerospace medicine and air transport, presenting their findings at the annual meetings. The society promotes cooperation among interdisciplinary research groups and links with aerospace-medicine institutes, societies and organisations in Germany and abroad, and it especially fosters opportunities for members to meet and personally consult experts in the various specialities of aerospace medicine. The DGLRM maintains the Deutsche Akademie für Flugmedizin (DAF), which organises the training and continuing education of flight surgeons and supports and conducts research projects. It participates in the AWMF guidelines programme, in some cases as the lead organisation, and has been a member of the AWMF since November 2015. It is an associate member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DGLR) and has been an "affiliate organization" of the Aerospace Medical Association in Washington, DC since 1972. It maintains close contacts with the German Flight Surgeons' Association (DFV) and is a founding member of the European Society of Aerospace Medicine (ESAM). The society publishes the journal "Flugmedizin Tropenmedizin Reisemedizin" (FTR) and organises an annual scientific congress — the 64th annual meeting is scheduled for 2026. It awards scientific prizes, including the Albrecht-Ludwig-Berblinger Prize, the science prize of the German Academy for Flight and Travel Medicine, endowed with 10,000 euros (as of 2024), and DGLRM science medals, which have been awarded to figures including Klaus-Dietrich Flade, Sigmund Jähn and Ulf Merbold. Its office address is DGLRM e.V., Postfach 100216, 07702 Jena, Germany.

History

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin (DGLRM e.V.) was founded in 1961 as a registered voluntary association. From the beginning it was independent, free of external interests, and financed exclusively through membership dues. It was established as an association of people interested in flight medicine, and over the decades it has grown into a society of roughly 430 members, about 90% of whom are physicians working in flight-medical examination centres, scientific flight medicine or flight physiology, space medicine, aviation medicine, travel medicine, or as military flight surgeons. The civil–military composition of the membership is roughly balanced. The society's purpose, laid down in its statutes, is realised through events such as continuing-education measures and the scientific annual meetings, the publication of scientific communications, the formation of interdisciplinary research groups, and the awarding of scientific prizes. Working groups for special topics — such as the history of aerospace medicine and air transport — examine particular problem areas and present their work at the annual assemblies. The DGLRM promotes cooperation among interdisciplinary research groups and links with aerospace-medicine institutes, societies and organisations in Germany and abroad, and it especially fosters opportunities for members to meet and personally consult experts in the various specialities of aerospace medicine. The DGLRM maintains the Deutsche Akademie für Flugmedizin (DAF), which organises the training and continuing education of flight surgeons and supports and conducts research projects. The DAF was founded in 1991 in the legal form of a registered association (e.V.). The society participates in the AWMF guidelines programme, in some cases as the lead organisation, and has been a member of the AWMF since November 2015. It is an associate member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DGLR) and has been an "affiliate organization" of the Aerospace Medical Association in Washington, DC since 1972. Close contacts exist with the German Flight Surgeons' Association (DFV), and the DGLRM is a founding member of the European Society of Aerospace Medicine (ESAM). The society organises an annual scientific congress; the 64th annual meeting is scheduled for 2026. It publishes the journal "Flugmedizin Tropenmedizin Reisemedizin" (FTR). Among its awards are the Albrecht-Ludwig-Berblinger Prize, the science prize of the German Academy for Flight and Travel Medicine, named after Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger and awarded annually with a prize sum of 10,000 euros (as of 2024), and the DGLRM science medals, which have been awarded to figures including Klaus-Dietrich Flade, Sigmund Jähn and Ulf Merbold. The society's office is located in Jena, Germany.
