History

The 1st Berliner Stadtlotterie was approved on 16 August 1945 by the Allied Kommandantur, with its drawing scheduled for 25 August 1945; the first drawing achieved a net profit of 352,946.80 RM. It ended after 10 draws in March 1947. On 30 March 1947 the Magistrat of Greater Berlin established the Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin (DKLB), approved by an unpublished order of the Allied Kommandantur. The multi-class lottery of the DKLB started on 11 July 1947 with the drawing of the 1st class. On 30 June 1951 the Berlin Senate approved a bill allowing the DKLB's number lottery; the law was promulgated on 28 July 1952 in the Gesetzblatt of the State of Berlin. The Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin became an Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts and received permission to introduce the number lottery consisting of individual drawing processes. The game "5aus90" was first drawn on 11 January 1953 in the Berlin Lottozentrale; more than 300,000 bets were placed for the first game, with four four-number winners each receiving 10,822 Mark from a 50 Pfennig stake. By the third week the number of bets exceeded half a million, and a record 68,236 Mark was awarded for the single four-number winner of that drawing.
