Deutsche Umweltstiftung

The Deutsche Umweltstiftung is a state-approved, recognized non-profit organization that is politically and economically independent, with its members' work carried out on a voluntary basis. Founded on 31 March 1982 in Mainz, it describes itself as the largest — and also the oldest — German community foundation by number of supporting persons, with 3,568 donors as of 16 September 2026. Its motto is "Hoffnung durch Handeln" (Hope through Action). Its goals include environmental education, training and information; consumer information and consumer protection; recognition and support of outstanding commitment in nature conservation and environmental protection through cash prizes such as the book award "Reading for the Environment", the journalist award and the hope award; promotion of nature conservation and environmental protection activities by individuals and associations, federations, institutes, companies, civic action groups and research organizations; purchase and maintenance of lands to support nature and landscape protection; and participation in environmental discussions, licensing procedures and legislative initiatives. In the 40 years since its founding it has developed, initiated and carried out well over 300 projects, alone or with partners.

In the 40 years since its founding it has developed, initiated and carried out well over 300 projects, alone or with partners. The foundation has always endeavoured to act in the spirit of giving hope and has helped to promote different ideas, approaches, impulses and initiatives since it was launched in 1982.
