Overview
DVS – Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V. (German Welding Society) is a German technical-scientific association active across all areas of joining technology. Its scope covers welding as well as other joining processes, adhesive technologies, coating processes and cutting processes, applied to metallic and non-metallic materials and material composites. It is a registered voluntary association (eingetragener Verein) headquartered in Düsseldorf. The association reports around 19,000 members, comprising roughly 14,000 individuals and nearly 3,000 companies and institutions. It maintains contacts with research institutes, industry and politics. Its purpose is to promote welding and all related processes, initiating and supporting research and development on materials, technologies and joining applications through its research association, Forschungsvereinigung Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V. The central field of that research association is industrial collective research (Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung, IGF) in joining, cutting and coating, financially supported in cooperation with the AiF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen „Otto von Guericke“ e. V.) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Education and certification are central to DVS operations. The association supports training and further education of joining-technology specialists at around 300 education institutions nationwide, participates in developing education and examination content, and regulates the examination and certification of specialists as well as quality assurance of companies. Through its institutions, recognized as state-approved bodies, DVS also monitors the welding-technical execution of constructions and structures on behalf of building supervisory authorities, testing institutes and manufacturers. DVS-PersZert, the association's personnel certification body, qualifies, tests and certifies personnel according to national, European and international guidelines and standards, and is an Authorised National Body of the EWF and IIW. DVS is organized into five regional associations (Landesverbände) and 67 district associations (Bezirksverbände), plus over 300 DVS education institutions and numerous advisory offices. It reports training approximately 100,000 people annually. Its organs are the annual assembly, the presidium, the board council and the main management. Technically it is divided into committees for education, finances, regional associations and technology; more than 2,000 experts work in more than 200 technical working bodies. The DVS Group comprises operating subsidiaries that support the association's goals, including DVS Media GmbH (a specialist publisher), GSI – Gesellschaft für Schweisstechnik International GmbH, SLV Halle GmbH, Institut für Fügetechnik und Werkstoffprüfung (IFW) Jena, SLV Mannheim GmbH, DVS ZERT GmbH, and welding course centres in Hameln, Mainz-Wiesbaden, Mönchengladbach and Pfalz. DVS Media publishes journals, books, teaching media, technical rules and electronic media in German and English, including Schweissen und Schneiden, Der Praktiker, DER SCHWEISSER, Welding & Cutting, Joining Plastics and Thermal Spray Bulletin, and operates the B2B platform Home of Welding. DVS is the organizer of the Schweißen & Schneiden trade fair, generally held every four years at Messe Essen since 1952, where it is the oldest regularly held fair. It also organizes the biennial national competition Jugend schweißt for young welding talent, and events such as ROBOTER. The association's roots reach back to 1897, while its present form dates from its 1947 registration in Düsseldorf.
History
The roots of DVS reach back to 1897, with the founding of the Calciumcarbid und Acetylengasverein in Frankfurt am Main and the Deutscher Verein für Acetylen und Carbid in Berlin. Over the following decades the organization underwent numerous name changes and mergers: in 1898 it became the Deutscher Acetylenverein (DAV); in 1907 a Fachgruppe autogene Metallverarbeitung was formed; in 1909 the Verband für autogene Metallbearbeitung, Berlin (VAM) was established; in 1925 a Fachausschuss für Schweißtechnik was created at the VDI in Berlin; in 1929 a Werbeausschuss für Elektroschweißung was formed in Berlin; and in 1930 the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Elektroschweißung was founded in Berlin. In 1932 the management of DAV and VAM were merged. In 1942 the Deutscher Verband für Schweisstechnik und Acetylen, Berlin (DVSA) was created. After the Second World War, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Schweißtechnik Berlin E. V. (AS) was formed in 1945, followed by the Kammer der Technik, Berlin (KDT) in 1946. The birth of today's association is dated to 1947, when the Deutscher Verband für Schweißtechnik was entered in the register of associations in Düsseldorf. In 1948 a Fachausschuss Schweißtechnik was established in Berlin, and in 1974 a Wissenschaftliche Sektion Schweißtechnik, Berlin (WSS). In 1998 the organization adopted its current name, Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V. The phrase "verwandte Verfahren" (related processes) covers more than 250 different joining, cutting and coating technologies. Over time DVS built a broad structure for research, education and certification. Its research association, Forschungsvereinigung Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V., became the vehicle for industrial collective research (IGF) in joining, cutting and coating, cooperating with the AiF and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The association established a nationwide network of around 300 education institutions and, through DVS-PersZert, a personnel certification body recognized as an Authorised National Body of the EWF and IIW. It also operates state-approved bodies that monitor welding-technical execution of constructions and structures on behalf of building supervisory authorities, testing institutes and manufacturers. DVS has long been associated with major industry events. It organizes the Schweißen & Schneiden trade fair, which has been held at Messe Essen since 1952 and is the oldest regularly held fair there; the fair is normally staged every four years. In 2017, due to reconstruction at the Essen fairgrounds, it took place exceptionally at the Düsseldorf exhibition grounds, with 1,030 exhibitors from more than 40 countries. The following edition, originally planned for September 2021, was postponed to 2023 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. DVS also organizes the biennial national competition Jugend schweißt for young welding talent and technical conferences such as ROBOTER. The DVS Group today comprises operating subsidiaries that support the association's goals, including DVS Media GmbH, GSI – Gesellschaft für Schweisstechnik International GmbH, SLV Halle GmbH, Institut für Fügetechnik und Werkstoffprüfung (IFW) Jena, SLV Mannheim GmbH, DVS ZERT GmbH, and welding course centres in Hameln, Mainz-Wiesbaden, Mönchengladbach and Pfalz. DVS Media publishes specialist journals, books, teaching media, technical rules and electronic media in German and English, and operates the B2B platform Home of Welding. The association reports around 19,000 members and trains approximately 100,000 people annually.
