Overview

The Deutscher Verband Technisch-Wissenschaftlicher Vereine (DVT) — the German Association of Technical and Scientific Associations — is a non-profit registered association (gemeinnütziger eingetragener Verein) headquartered in Berlin. It functions as an umbrella body for German technical and scientific learned societies, currently counting 36 member societies that together represent more than 210,000 members, including natural scientists, engineers, companies, organizations and institutes. Its stated purpose is to address common tasks that transcend the individual disciplinary remit of its member associations across the various fields of technology. The DVT's core objectives include promoting the technical sciences, harmonizing common technical foundations, further developing technical education, and contributing to legislation and administrative questions in the field of technology. It positions itself as a link between science, industry, politics and society. Beyond policy advice, the further development of the patent system, and the representation of German technical and scientific positions at European and global level, a major focus of its activities is the promotion of young technical and scientific talent and the advancement of the technical and scientific educational landscape. Internationally, the DVT represents German engineering interests at ENGINEERS EUROPE (formerly FEANI), the European federation of engineering associations, and through its international network advocates for German engineers worldwide. It is the German member of FEANI and serves as the national contact point for applications for the FEANI EUR ING (European Engineer) title, with the National Monitoring Committee handling the assessment of applications. The association also administers the Stiftung Werner-von-Siemens-Ring on an honorary basis and is entitled to nominate candidates for several major German technical and scientific awards, including the Deutscher Zukunftspreis and the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Preis. The DVT was first founded on 27 May 1916 by leading German engineering and scientific associations. It was dissolved on 1 August 1934 during the National Socialist period and re-established after the war on 5 August 1948. Today its board consists of five persons, with Gerald Gerlach as sole-authorized chairman and Thomas Kiefer as managing director. The association operates through committees covering engineering and technical questions, natural science and technology, legal and tax affairs, publishing matters, and the FEANI National Monitoring Committee.

History

The Deutscher Verband Technisch-Wissenschaftlicher Vereine (DVT) was first founded on 27 May 1916. Its founding members were the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI), the Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE), the Verein Deutscher Eisenhüttenleute, the Schiffbautechnische Gesellschaft, the Verein Deutscher Chemiker, and the Verband Deutscher Architekten- und Ingenieurvereine. The association was created to handle common tasks that transcended the individual disciplinary remit of the member societies across the various fields of technology. During the period of National Socialism, the association was dissolved on 1 August 1934. It was only re-established after the end of the war. The re-founding took place on 5 August 1948. In addition to the founding members VDI, VDE and VDEh, the Deutsche Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches, the Verein Deutscher Gießereifachleute, the Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhütten- und Bergleute (GDMB), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für chemisches Apparatewesen participated in the re-establishment. Over the following decades the DVT developed into a coordinating umbrella for German technical and scientific societies. It became the German member of the European federation of engineering associations FEANI (now ENGINEERS EUROPE) and took on the role of national contact point for the FEANI EUR ING (European Engineer) title, with a National Monitoring Committee assessing applications. The EUR ING title has been officially recognized by the European Commission since 1991 and serves to implement the European Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. The DVT has also been entrusted with the honorary administration of the Stiftung Werner-von-Siemens-Ring for many decades. Between 1983 and 1993, on the initiative of Karl Steinbuch, it awarded the DVT-Preis "Technik und Öffentlichkeit" for publications that promoted the relationship between technology and the public. The association is entitled to nominate candidates for major technical and scientific awards, including the Deutscher Zukunftspreis, the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Preis of the DFG, and the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring. Today the DVT is headquartered in Berlin and comprises 36 technical and scientific member societies with more than 210,000 members in total. Its board consists of five persons, with Gerald Gerlach as sole-authorized chairman and Thomas Kiefer as managing director. The association operates through committees on engineering and technical questions, natural science and technology, legal and tax affairs, publishing matters, and the FEANI National Monitoring Committee.
