Overview

The Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenenbildung (DIE) is a German research institute for adult education and lifelong learning, operating as the Leibniz-Zentrum für Lebenslanges Lernen (Leibniz Centre for Lifelong Learning). It develops services from its research findings to make continuing education more attractive, inclusive and effective, derives policy recommendations from its analyses, supports adult education teachers in their daily work, and researches how adult education can be improved to enable participation for all people in Germany. It was founded in 1957 in Frankfurt/Main as the 'Pädagogische Arbeitsstelle des Deutschen Volkshochschul-Verbandes' (PAS) and was renamed Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenenbildung in the 1990s. It publishes an annual report and maintains a VHS programme archive.

History

The institute was founded in 1957 in Frankfurt/Main as the 'Pädagogische Arbeitsstelle des Deutschen Volkshochschul-Verbandes' (PAS). In its early years, its work focused on the quality of programme design, methods and especially the qualification of course instructors at German Volkshochschulen, and its library was established. From the 1960s, volumes on the theory and practice of adult education and materials for adult education appeared, and the official Volkshochschul statistics were developed and have since been published annually. In the 1970s the institute grew significantly in staff and funding through political support. In the 1980s it devoted itself to research on educational work with so-called educationally disadvantaged groups such as people with a migration background, the unemployed, and illiterate persons, and it responded to social developments and challenges with a research focus on health and environmental education. In the 1990s it was renamed Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenenbildung, marking the opening of its work and services to all institutions of adult education. The institute looks back on more than six decades of research on teaching and learning of adults.
